The Capristo website says it's a 10db increase at low revs, but vendors say it's "subjectively quieter" at low revs than stock. Can anyone share their experience? I want something that isn't going to be obnoxious on freeways / in town but will still scream when I open it up.

Also if anyone has one in socal I'd love to go for a ride in it!

I've never (knowingly) heard a Sound 1, but I don't think a 355, even with a Sound 3 as I have, is at all obnoxious when driven around town or cruising a highway.

Quieter at low revs than stock would be pretty darn quiet, I'd think.

I had a Capristo 2 and it was similar sound level to the stock muffler when not on bypass.

do you think that would still be the case with straight pipes ? ie: the same as stock muffler with straight pipes.

Cat delete doesn't affect the sound that much with either stock or aftermarket muffler. I was surprised at how little difference delete pipes made, 5-10 percent louder.

The car came with what I believe are Fabspeed sport cats, if that makes a difference

A search would reveal Capristo 2 is their "loudest" one by design.

Had a Capristo 3 and sold it withing 500 miles because it was too quiet before bypass. I sold it to get a Capristo 2 because Capristo states the Cap 2 has the loudest before bypass. However, it is still super quiet (verified by multiple owners) although they might have minimized the baffling more by design.

No one has a Capristo muffler in any variation and complained it was too loud before bypass. Most complaints are being too quiet, which is my complaint.

The Ferrari community has been bamboozled for decades. Get any variation. The result will be relatively the same in practice.

If you want any hope of it having at least some slight extra umphh before bypass, get the Capristo 2. All other variations will be a waste of money imo. It will sound like a Lexus before bypass opens.

Simply put, Capristo is not the muffler for me because it is too quiet (before bypass). That is why my Capristo 2 is now for sale.

BTW. My car is a 2.7 with stock headers, stock Y-pipe, and test pipes.

@INTMD8 has a Cap 2 on his 2.7 with test pipes and his own custom catless y-pipe. Check out his driving vids on Youtube for sound.

Don't get me wrong... when bypass opens, Capristo is nearly unbeatable in terms of scream and pitch. Especially on a 2.7. It's just soft as hell unless you're on it.

Every year, the Capristo topic comes up like clockwork and those who still care enough (like myself) try to correct misinformation.

"I'll try my best to explain this without making anyone bleed at the ears. haha

The sound I and II refer to valve closed, sound I is basically stock sound, sound II is a little louder. Sound III refers to when the valves are open this is the F1 scream we talk about.

So the choices are as follows sound 2 which is technically (sound 2 & 3) 2 when valves are closed and 3 when open OR sound 3 which is (sound 1 & 3) 1 when valves are closed and 3 when open

at the end of the day the sound 2 exhaust is louder than the sound 3 exhaust when the valves are closed and the same when they are open.

We HIGHLY recommend getting the sound 3 (1&3) because when the valve is closed compared to open there is a drastic difference and it sound amazing. this is our most popular system for the F355.

    Thank You
    Erik

When Erik (Capristo USA/Taurino Racing) states the Capristo 3 has a drastic difference between bypass closed and bypass open... he is implying it goes from super quiet to F1.

The Capristo 2 goes from quiet to F1. "sound I is basically stock sound, sound II is a little louder."

Unfortunately, for most of us in practice (not in theory) we can hardly discern between "basically stock sound" and "a little louder" when bypass is closed. If you can tell the difference, wonderful. Most won't be able to.

A Capristo 1, which I presume to be a Sound 1 (bypass closed)/Sound 2 (bypass open) design... would be a complete waste of money because to my ears, the Capristo 3 (sound 1/sound 3) is already a waste of money.

I should add, most purchase Capristo 3 because that is what Capristo USA likes to push and tends to stock. And because of the way it is labeled, people just presume it is the loudest version because that is what most people want. The higher-ups or the ones who have been working at Capristo USA long enough know the Capristo 2 is technically their loudest version, but only marginally before bypass. It is also usually custom ordered, which is most likely the reason they put minimal effort in educating the public on the differences and most won't even be able to tell, so none of it really matters.

IMO, Capristo should only offer a Capristo 2 and stop messin' with 355 owner's heads. 9 out of 10 owners chose the Cap 3 because they believed it was the loudest version and happened to be available. If Capristo stocked both equally and told people Cap 2 is louder, I believe they would move more Cap 2's than 3's.

The irony is most people who did custom order a Capristo 2 ordered it because they figured it is the second loudest version.... yet here we are. Not a single a complaint about being too loud.... because none of them are loud.

I hope that answers the OP's question :).

Pete, the OP is actually interested in my Cap 2 and local, but undecided on variation. I usually don't get into long explanations on why a Cap 2 is the best version because it's too long to clearly explain something seemingly counter-intuitive. If he passes on it, you'll get a PM.

Sounds good, no rush or pressure. I like my challenge unmuffled exhaust but sometimes I get self conscious driving around a yellow screaming (literally) Ferrari.
