Kevin of Mototechnique confirmed on here some time back that it is not even carbon kevlar weave that you see, and that in fact the first layer is simply fibreglass cloth, and quite straightforward to replicate the original sunken look by adding such a layer prior to a final thin coat of paint on a restoration. If you look closely in the corners of panels on some of the early cars you can see where basic fibreglass strand matt has been shoved in to bulk up the structure during the lay up, and the paint has sunk into that.

    Here's my personal experience.

As far as repaints go, it's known that a number of specialist coach-builders can replicate the 'weave' in the paint in a fresh repaint, you don't have to wait 2 years for a repaint to 'settle in'.

I don't think it's correct to say 'the ONLY way to tell original paint is a sanding job', original paint can be verified without damaging the vehicle's paint by sanding it, although if the car's bodywork is being repaired anyway, that's a way to check.

Under normal inspection circumstances of a car that does not need repairs, of course, as a start, if the car's records are available, they might explicitly state that the car has been repainted, as we have encountered several times.

The simple reason why many F40 resources say that visible weave = original paint, is, most often, repainted cars have no weave at all. But it's not that simple, because many F40s left Maranello with no weave in the paint, whereas some had partial weave. F40 finish at the point of production wasn't as uniform as the next-generation F50 where the weave is both prominent & uniform across all body panels in all the cars which still have original paint. When they were new, 'weave' on the F40s may not have been as visible, but years later after the composite body panels go through many temperature cycles, the weave can become more visible. Upon physical inspection of the car, consider that the F40's original hand-painted single-stage paint is both thin and inconsistent, there are areas (usually the bigger panels) where you can clearly see the texture and weave of the body, and, there are areas where there is no weave apparent at all. The paint along seams and edges is visibly thin and has often been polished away. As is well-known, single stage paint means the color and the clear lacquer are painted in one layer of Glasurit Rosso Corsa as a mix, which is the case with original F40 paint. You can test this with a solvent in an obscure area and your light colored cloth will turn reddish with paint residue. Single stage paint is quite different to modern paint where there are essentially three layers, primer, color and then clear lacquer, solvent won't release any red paint residue from modern enamel Rosso Corsa paint.

If you have experience inspecting F40s, having first determined if it is indeed single-stage paint, you can learn to tell upon close scrutiny if the paint is at least mostly original (with perhaps area repairs done in period) by observing the characteristics of the paint as it presents itself, F40s came from the Maranello works with characteristic overspray in key places, typical paint contamination, thin paint, and sometimes with paint drips in key areas.

By the way, when checking F40 paint, my understanding is Glasurit Rosso Corsa FER 300/9 was introduced by Ferrari SpA in 1988, and Glasurit Rosso Corsa FER 300/12 was introduced in 1991, this explains why many a fair number of F40s have RC FER 300/9 paint code stickers, and later production F40s have RC FER 300/12 paint code stickers, this applies to both USA and Eu/ROW F40s.

no other car, for me at least, gives me goose bumps like seeing one. Ferrari made other magnificent supercars, but this one to me is beyond supreme. There is no second place. F40 is the KING...

Interesting teaser from John Temerian/Curated. For those who don't recognize that chassis #, it's the (now) gray heavily modified example that sold at B-J earlier this year and was promoted (unsuccessfully) by RM at Monterey last summer. It was yellow and an active racer in the 1990s-2000s.

The facebook group is providing loads of gems

Before anyone tries to shoot me down again, I know some may not be what they appear to be! still look good though.

I have taken none of these, if the person who did wants recognition of such just let me know and I will add or remove as required.

Quite a mix and match, easier to put them here then in the various F40 threads, I love them all despite claims to the contrary!

New one of me, observations are :- no mirror, wrong mirror, no Pinninfarina badges, wrong wheels, missing front clam side grilles.

It's not the yellow race one, and pics look old, correct wheelbase so not a 308/328 conversion. Bet its some sort of German tuning company mash up from the 90s for a middle eastern customer. That driver no doubt has a wet butt!

Warren I've sent you a PM.

What you are looking at are old images of something that's very clearly not a real F40.

It's a fiberglass-bodied replica by a French-based company SEFAP/CMO Production who provided kits for the Ferrari 330 P4, F40, Lamborghini Countach, Diablo, GT40 etc. with prices starting at 21,500 Eu.

They operated from circa 1990 till they went out of business 17 years ago in 2006 forum-auto.caradisiac.com
