Hello all, I'm trying to pretty up my '88 328. First on the list is new lug bolts with good chrome. I am leery of eBay as experience with other cars indicates there may be great parts or they may look new but be total junk if not dangerous.

Where would you go to get a new bolt set?

    TIA
    Lester

I'd buy Hill Engineering Bolts. Ricambi has them: SLWB01 Wheel Bolt.

I ordered the Hill Engineering ones. I know that chroming takes a lot out of the metal and it requires special heat treatment to make it strong enough for lug bolts. This is work that is done here as they used to treat for military supply reasons. But their Chrome guy died.

There’s a shop here in SoCal That does chroming and powder coating.

So how much was the re-chrome?

(Owners would like to know how the cost of a re-chrome compares to the cost of buying a new set - If the re-chrome costs twice the price of a new set, many owners would simply buy a new set instead)

Also, after the re-chrome, how do the wheel bolts fit the socket for fitting them to the car?

(Sometimes the chrome thickness can vary, and the bolts don't fit the sockets very well, risking cracking the chrome when the bolts are used)

I paid around $300, I believe they stripped the old chrome plating and start with fresh chrome plating. The socket fit just fine with no issue and still able to take the torque without any sign of cracking nor scratching.

I had a complete set of used ones rechromed locally for 200 euros twelve years ago.
Was much less than a complete factory set, and I was pleased with the results; after rechroming the angles were only "very slightly less sharp" than on the originals.
They are starting to get slightly pitted again now, but only on the rear wheels.

Costs have moved on massively in the last 12 years - How much would re-chroming cost compared to buying new bolts today?

What do mean “chrome takes a lot out of the metal”?

I don't know for rechroming, it may probably vary, depending who makes the job, but as for a new set:
If we are talking about a car with the revised suspension, as yours I believe (my two are early '89 build), meaning "88.5 and 89" for our american friends (as wheels bolts are different on the "serie 1" ans "serie 2" 328s, due to the difference in offset of the suspension) and as for factory parts:

The "long ones" (= front wheel) part 136226 are listed as "available" at Maranello Classic Parts, £ 39,78 each = £ 397,80 for the 10 you need (should you need ten...)
The "short ones" (= rear wheel) part 120503 are listed as "Out of Stock"at Maranello Classic Parts, but a replacement, 120503A is listed as "available" at £ 36,54 = £ 365,40 for 10. Eurospares has the original, 120503, listed as "available to order" at £ 58,26 = £ 582,60 for ten.

Therefore, for a full set: either:
    397,80 + 365,40 = £ 763,20
    or 397,60 + 582,60 = £ 980,20.

When you have bolts rechromed, they have to take out what's left of the old chrome to go to bare metal, plus preparing the said metal to support the new chrome, so, in some cases, the metal might be shaved a bit, sometimes making the bolts 'oh so slighlty" thinner/smaller.
When I had a set rechromed twelve years ago, the bolts came out not thinner, but the six lateral angles of the "head" were a bit less sharp than on the original ones. You have to know it to notice, and it is not noticeable when they are in place on the wheel. No problem whatsoever with the hexagonal wrench.

Yes, that makes sense. They would “Polish” them with a sanding belt/disk that would round the corners a bit.

Are those 316ss threads rolled or just cut on a CNC?
