My first Ferrari was a 458, loved it. A brand new Roma became available due to a client losing all his allocations. I decided to take it because I figured it would help my cause for getting a 296. I traded the 458. The plan apparently worked. Shortly after that I was offered a 296 slot that someone vacated.

I am estimating the 296 will be here second quarter of next year. Meanwhile I’m driving a boring bmw on my 80 mile daily commute. I drive the Roma about 100 miles a week. The Roma is a fabulous car. I would say it’s the best front engine car I’ve ever driven. However, I long for a mid engine car.

I have been thinking about trading my Roma for a 458 or 488 while I wait for the 296. What’s holding me back is I would like to suffer as little financial damage as possible. My Roma was 300 msrp and based on what I’m seeing, if I trade now I’m losing quite a bit. Then I’m concerned I’ll lose money again on the next one. 488s are around 260k right now. I think they may fall some by next year. 458s are 200-240k at most F dealers. Not talking about last year spiders. Those are definitely higher. So what I’m wondering is it better just to sit tight and only take one big haircut next year? Would it be worse to take a haircut now and then another haircut later? Is it all about the same?

If it’s just an end goal to get the 296 and be done, then I’d just wait and trade the Roma when it comes.

If you truly want a V8 mid engine Ferrari (which I would agree with to be the end goal), then I’d definitely get a 458/488/F8 by trading the Roma… and if it were me, I’d try to keep whichever one it is when the 296 comes in and if you can afford it, keep both and sell the 296 after a year or so… but to your question, I don’t feel you will lose much at all, if any, if you have to sell/trade the 458/488/F8 when the 296 comes in. I think values of those 3 are going to stay pretty consistent from here on (opinion)The only one that might hurt is the Roma sale/trade.

    This is a good take.

I think Roma is likely to depreciate the most so would get rid now to avoid a bigger bath!

I agree. Better than trading several cars and getting a 458/488 for only about…..9 months

I somewhat agree with this. That is why I’m thinking of making a move. On the other hand, I think Roma prices will have to remain above California and Portofino prices.

The Roma being a newer platform and from what I've heard an all around better F than the California and Portofino Its safe to assume prices will reflect that. But as for OPs questions if you really want a V8 mid engine car picking up an F8 or 488 would be your best bet until the 296 arrives those in my opinion at least should hold value better than the Roma.

I would get out of the Roma and Maybe get into something older, 360/430 Stick and drive around a bit. Those cars hold

Dealer needs to make money on every trade. The more you swap cars the more it will cost you, if that is your biggest concern. Otherwise, you can realize that per mile they are expensive to drive, but meant to be driven and enjoyed.

Joe ,get the one you want now , tomorrow is never promised. Also I think the Roma will take a bigger hit down the road especially when the ragtop starts being delivered . Best, Kirk.

Non-super car Ferraris generally depreciate to one-third of MSRP (not including any amounts paid over MSRP) within ten years. Some more, some less. Mileage used to be a value killer, but not so much today.

The key to a new Ferrari is the warranty. These cars are expensive to fix. The more trivial the item, e.g., tire pressure monitors, the more expensive and harder it is to fix. It wasn't that long ago, a new Ferrari only had a one-year warranty. I believe it is now three years and you can buy an additional two years. After that, you can buy additional coverage, but I think it is limited to powertrain, which is not normally a problem. Or, put another way, any powertrain problem should have been discovered within the five-year period if the car is driven. If it sits in the garage, you might have a timebomb.

Again, it is the little **** on a new Ferrari that will drive you crazy. I had a 1998 Maranello. The Service Manager told me to put black tape over the CEL.

The result is two models. The first is to buy new and swap out within two years. You will take a depreciation hit, but warranty should cover any problems. (Note, after the first car, you can roll the sales tax.) The second is to be a bottom feeder. The early California cars are close to being fully depreciated, for example. So you roll the dice, do I buy an extended powertrain warranty and somehow put up with the rest of the bs, or do I go naked? If the damn thing blows up, you can sell it as a project on BaT.

Caveat. Ferrari occasionally makes a lemon. For whatever reason, the damn car cannot be fully fixed. I believe lemon laws only apply to new cars. Be careful out there. I would never buy a late-model Ferrari at auction. I want to see the paperwork. A Ferrari with no records is like having unprotected sex with a hooker.

You're going to get a buzz cut on all of these models including the 296 so just get what you want without worrying about cost.

To me, the 458 is the only option to drive now while you wait for your 296 and has limited downside. Well kept 458’s hold their value for sure.

If it were me and I couldn’t hold out, and wanted a mid-engine asap….I’d trade the Roma for the best 458 that I could make a key swap for, then drive that until the 296 arrives. I’d just think it’ll hold value better than the Roma. If I had to throw money at the trade…I hold on to the Roma.

Congrats - the F8 is probably about the best stop-gap solution while waiting for the 296 :)

Save yourself the hassle of waiting, getting into other cars, more Roma depreciation etc and buy a used 296 now. Why wait?

The other financial benefit of the Roma is that you still have the full warranty and service coverage. So unless you think the relative depreciation of the Roma will be high enough to offset those benefits plus the dealer "spread" and any savings(?) on taxes and insurance, you're better off (financially) holding out.

Of course, everything has a price...

    Congrats on the F8.

Will you keep this alongside the 296 when it arrives or will you sell one of them?

Anyone ever find themselves completely indecisive on which Ferrari they actually want? Some days I want a 458, then a 599, then a 430, maybe a California T, ah an F12 for sure, then I repeat this all over again.

yep. Maybe what I really want is a manual 430 spider and add scuderia bumper and skirts. Or a Speciale. No I’m good with just the 296 and I’ll keep the TR. Or maybe I should cut the F12 into a barchetta with louvered TdF rear fenders and make a 275 NART Spider tribute…
