Capristo 355 owners worldwide are probably going to read this thread baffled and shocked. Shocked because they know what I've described is accurate.

Agreed, and that's what I was told: "you want the 3, that's what we sell the most of; anything else would have to be special ordered, the 3 we keep in stock".

I have a 5.2 with Capristo 1, Hyperflow cats, and (gasp!) stock manifolds.

Anybody who calls Cap 1 “quiet” at any RPM frankly has a different definition than me. It’s basically perfect at around town speeds in terms of tone and volume. It’s friggin’ loud at WoT though, which is great if I’m alone on the road but I get borderline bashful about it if near traffic. Overall very happy with the set up.

Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the difference versus stock, as I don’t have the stock exhaust. Good luck sorting it out.

There’s also people who think they have a Cap 1 when they see “Sound 1/3” labeled on their muffler. That’s a Cap 3.

5.2’s will be louder than 2.7’s with Capristo before bypass opens. When bypass opens, 2.7 Capristos have a higher pitch over 5.2’s.

Overall, Capristos are good on 5.2’s

I'm just going to step in here and clarify a lot of info as I've got a lot of experience with these particular systems.

First, let's talk about cats as a few people have mentioned this
Here is a diagram of the 355 exhaust:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

You can see there is the upper Y pipe section which meets the central singular inlet in the silencer - there are no catalysts in this channel. This is the LOUD channel. Exhaust gases flow through here when the valve is OPEN.

The lower channel is the one that features the cats, it feeds into the lower, outer inlets on the silencer which feed the QUIET channel. Exhaust gases flow through here when the valve is CLOSED.

So someone earlier in the thread said they only noticed a difference at idle, that makes perfect sense. The cats only affect the QUIET channel.
If you want your quiet channel to be louder, install sport cats or remove the cats entirely.
When the valves open you effectively have a decat exhaust.

    Now, for the sound levels.
The sound level refers to the difference between the loud and quiet channels of the exhaust

Level 1: Low volume / High volume
Level 2: Medium volume / High volume
Level 3: Loud volume / High volume

ALL the exhausts are the same volume with the valves open, all you're deciding on is how quiet you want the valves CLOSED channel to be.

Level 1, the change is super jarring
Level 2, the quiet channel is nice and meaty but not intrusive
Level 3, there is no difference between the two

I think the guys at Taurino are making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be with their explanation.
It's pretty simple once you understand it - Capristo themselves have verified this explanation to be correct.

I too have a Capristo 2 and have the same experience. Bypass closed, the idle bark does sound a bit more aggressive but on the highway I wouldn't think it much louder than stock.

Open bypass at ~ 3500 RPM is probably the most objectionable with a touch of drone. No problem - either close the bypass with the remote or just drop it down a gear and you're back to aural bliss.

Also for long (solo) drives, I tend to use AirPods Pro with noise canceling on. I don't see any safety issues since I can still hear external noises like sirens or horns or even just a car passing but it knocks down any internal drone very well.

    This is incorrect.

The Y-pipe channel does have cats. Just smaller ones.

“Level 3, there is no difference between the two”

This contradicts my Cap 3 experience along with others’. The Cap 3 is as quiet or possibly even quieter than stock when bypass closed. That’s why I sold it.

If the bypass is wired open a capristo 3 is loud as hell at low rpm too.

Also my euro 5.2 y pipe has no cats in it and I'd love to know how they were gutted or if they came this way. I looked with my bore scope and nothing in there.

They were gutted. Ferrari didn’t make catless Y-pipes. I just had my 2.7 Y-pipe gutted. Easy to do.

Its weird I didn't see any obvious tool marks but I know it was done in the past. I wonder if they had melted as one of the main cats was starting to melt when I got it and **** people do with these cars.
I know my cap 3 is loud as hell I may see just how bad my bypass valve is and bring it back to snuf.

What does removing the y-pipe cats do as far as sound and performance?

    On a 2.7, 10 rwhp. On a 5.2, not sure.

10-15% increase in F1 pitch and volume. Less heat. Less weight.
