ive been tracking/instructing for 25 years and am at an impasse. i cannot stand the traffic getting to and from the track anymore. i typically drive 3 to 4 hours each way including an hour of bumper to bumper traffic in lotus elise. i also have an audi rs5 that would obviously be much more comfortable but it cant survive a track day in the dry without melting down. its ok in the rain but have only had nice weather this season.

so i need a new car if im going to keep driving on track. i love the lotus because of its pure driving experience and its open top. a gt3 would be good but its pricey and no open top. not even sunroof (which i had on my 997 gt3). same with cayman. boxster spyder is good choice but local tracks dont permit it due to roll over rules.

a z06 would offer the auto trans for bumper to bumper and has open top too so it would be perfect. i would have to add 100k to both of my cars for it and thats a lot. and would take few years to get anyway. stingray is more available and lower cost but i would always feel jealous of the z06. and dont love looks of c8 but can overlook that to get z06 motor.

any other ideas of an open top automatic trans sports car that can survive several moderate level track days/yr? new or used. thanks!

The open top requirement makes this a tough one. Most people want the extra rigidity of a closed top car.

Alfa 4C spider is the best thing I can come up with. Not that different from your Lotus though.

What about a WRX STI, Lancer Evo, GTR or something like that?

Thanks but Gts would be disappointment after I had gt3 in past. Plus not open top.

Alfa is the solution. Just have to go test it out and see if close enough experience to lotus.

If I don't like it, I will probably just keep lotus and stop tracking for a while. Maybe wait years for z06.

Couldn't you get the Porsche with a sunroof or as a targa if you wanted to?

Would another option be to do an arrive and drive arrangement in a Spec Miata or something like that? Lots of companies out there that rent cars.

Good advice but I'm not a fan of non gt 911s. And I've instructed in rental miatas and no thanks.

4c is the move but forums say the Chrysler dct is big issue. Same problems like ferrari f1 from 90s. Can't stop and go, creep, etc. I'm still trying find a car nearby to test out

Buy a race car. NASCAR harness. Six-point belts. Fire suppression. You name it. Someday you will be thankful you did.

Race car doesn't work for me as no room for trailer, tow vehicle, etc. And all that hassle is more than just driving elise would be.

If you been instructing for 25yrs. Buy the z51 and use your skills to smoke the unskilled guys in Z06's. That would be way more fun.

The z51/z06 are also dct not auto so perfect for track. Vette parts are also cheap. You can buy an entire dct vette trans or motors for maybe $10k ea.

Yes c8 ticks all the boxes but I don't love the looks, size, or style. Would overlook all that for z06 but that's unobtainable right now.

Alfa would be good compromise but just not sure if its transmission would be more convenient than lotus stick.

Btw only been instructing last 10 yrs. Regardless, older I get the less interested I am in passing other cars or lap times.

I have club raced two c5z06 since about 2005 from 3180lbs to 3550lbs in various classes. At that weight some fun goes away compared to the lightness of a lotus. Light is fun. Heavy can get the job done but with the sophistication of a caveman with a big club.

I do appreciate the advice. And back in day, I shouldve used full safety gear.
But these days I drive well below my limits and those of car. Havent pushed hard for a long time. Don't even drive in traffic anymore. Just pit in until marshall sees open track and sends me into that.
Truly believe I have greater risk accident commuting to track than on track.

im going to second the 4c idea. Drove one on track 2 years ago and it was fantastic. yes its a bit twicthy, but thats character not a flaw. The way it chewed through the gears was epic and its pretty much the only road car Ive ever driven that was stiff enough for the track out the box. cant comment on reliability, or how comfy you might find it on road. Compared to a lotus though the steering is heavy and a bit slow.
Litchfield or one of those companies in the Uk has lots of upgrades to sort these cars, but frankly it felt subjectively great right out the box on track.

Kinda thinking of one myself as a florida fun car and drive to the track car there, till the zo6 comes in. There really is noting else, if you didnt need a top that came off then a cayman Gt4 is also excellent but 80-120k used, wasnt there some sort of cayman spider that was a gt4 convertible, prob pricey.

Agreed non Gt porches, its like driving though cotton wool, you can sense the goodness there but its all too isolated and soft on track.

Whats the price on a decent 4c, 50-60K?

As a stopgap theres also the civic type R or the acura version if you can stand the looks. Saw one at the gelnn and it was really cooking. Dont know about a sunroof.

I wouldnt want to be driving a lotus to the track too often esp distance. But then a 65 yo friend just drove his exige 260 5 hrs tot he glenn and wil, drive it 10 hrs to VIR.

If you find a4c comfortable enough on road, and reliability is not an issue its pretty much not just the only choice but prob the best choice.
