Luckily, this appears to have happened when moving the car on my property, so very little grease was lost (minor / fresh splatters on heat shield).

The boot doesn't appear to be ripped, but I will confirm. If it's not ripped, and simply slipped out from under the clamp, what are the chances I can replace the little grease that was lost, slap a new clamp on there, and call it a day – without having to remove the axle?

If that's not possible, does anyone know the "proper" process? I'm not trying to cut corners, but I also don't want to over-complicate things.

    Thanks in advance.

I would remove the axle and clean out the CVJ. Reapply CVJ grease. Make sure mating surfaces are free of grease. My trick is to spray cheap hairspray onto the rubber boot mating surface and the metal mating surface. Reapply the clamp. voila!

Under normal cases the trick is not needed especially if there is a retaining lip on the metal mating surface. It's a real problem keeping boots on aftermarket rebuilt corvette C5 axles for racing so the trick is needed. I also use this trick when I mount my tires to my race wheels to prevent the sticky race tire from spinning on the wheel.

No tricks needed. Either the flange the seal attaches to is damaged or the clamp was not tight enough.

I will say the flange looks odd, kind of like something is on it so an incorrect boot will fit?

Remove the axle, the failed clamp and post another picture.

Thanks all. Does anyone know of the proper steps for removing the axle for a BBi? This is RH side. Any insight would be much appreciated – particularly into special tools needed.

Where would I find silicone alternatives? Also, would you mind sharing a high-level breakdown of the steps to remove the axle? I've been reading through forums for the 308 and TR, but I'm not sure how much of that corresponds to the BBi. The Workshop Manual says nothing other than the type of grease to use...

good question, also like to know this
when you have it out you may meassure the size and tell us please

about removing the "axle" / drive shaft: when I take out the engine from my BB I have to put them also out. but then the exhaust manifolds have been removed and so only have to loosen the 12 screws. but with the manifold in I think it will not or only hardly possible to remove. problem is to reach the screws at the flanges at the diff

Are you aware of step-by-step documentation for this? I can't seem to find it. I've looked in the workshop manual, threads, etc.. I was hoping to get all my ducks in a row before digging in so I could limit surprises mid project that require parts / tools / etc.. Maybe there's no step-by-step documentation because it's so easy / self-evident?

Remove 12 bolts and take it out? Not sure what requires further explanation.

the 6 bolts at the diff are hard to reach when the manifolds are in. and then I not know if you can take the shaft out without removing the rear manifold?

Pardon my ignorance here, but are you saying that all you do is remove the manifolds, then diff bolts, and it slides out?

I was under the impression the process meant removing the wheel and using socket extensions to get to the diff. Disconnecting the wheel hub would give clearance for the axle to slide out?

I never removed such a shaft separately because until now no need. but have to remove them when the engine has to go out. and for this the manifolds also has to go out and then it is very easy to remove the shafts. that is why I have written that I not know if you can get the shaft out without removing the manifold.

and I never take more apart from a car than necessary

Why remove the shaft to remove the engine? They are not in the way.
Like I said, some people like to just take cars apart..
And yes, you very obviously take more apart than necessary.

when I not remove the shafts, so only loosen them at the diff then they are in the way when taking out the engine. I work alone and so it is easier to remove the shafts when taking the engine out. also there are only 12 srews to take out what facilitate the work much

I have taken the engine out of my TR many times, but have never taken the engine out of my BB. One day I am sure I will need to.

How do I remove the BB engine without disconnecting the inner CV joints? From reading Brian and Romano's comments, are we debating disconnect vs. remove? Perhaps no need to remove the driveshaft (but would it not snag on the BB's manifolds when lifting the engine out?) If faced with the choice, I prefer to remove manifolds.

we talk about a BB or BBI, not a TR

that is why you have to remove the manifolds

The conversation was about removing the half shaft, not about removing the engine. When the engine is removed of course the manifolds need to be removed and the inner ends of the shafts need to be unbolted.
Read the words that were actually written.

Thats why we ran into trouble when I was trying to help you time your 400. I'd write words, you did something entirely different.

Uh, I don’t have a 400. A LP400S yes, but not a 400. Might be confusing me with someone else.

I was just commenting on Romano’s comment about what he does with his BB when he takes his engine out, which I thought was being commented on.

I don't know if this makes sense, Back in '88, due to an axle boot leak, my BBI engine started to catch fire. THANK GOD when I randomly pulled over from seeing black smoke, I was literally in front of a fire department! Barely any damage. Thank you God!

    :)

Brian should write all F workshop manuals and turbo-joe should handle the CS.
