600Kg cars at the same speeds only wear out their tires at 75% the rate of 800 Kg cars.....and only need 82% of the fuel.....

So, It is not the {compound, construction,...} of the tires--it is the weight of the cars !!

This is why I suggested a 400Kg minimum, 500 Kg maximum formula. If you can't get down to weight, you turn to refueling strategies. If you can get down to weight, you don't need any pit stops. But the seriously low weights means most of the aero has to go (indirectly).....

Less aero means longer accelerations, longer braking, and slower mid-corner speeds. Everything you need to enable passing.....

It's quite a bit more complex than that. The loads on the tires are affected by downforce tremendously, as well as braking, and torque. Center of gravity and of course size of the tires, as well as wheel diameter all have an impact.

Never the less, I completely agree with you the cars are way too heavy. Even with all the additional safety and rigidity of today's cars, I would much rather see 640-660 kg cars than 800. The 605 kg cars were pretty much all underweight, and they used a lot of ballast to make them legal. Now days teams don't even have paint jobs anymore just to make weight.

Bingo !!! F1 has gone too far with downforce, and it would be easier to reduce it and control it too.

The amount of energy that heats a tire is a strict function of weight and speed. So if a 800 Kg car runs around a turn at 180 MPH (130R) and a 600 Kg car runs around the same turn at the same speed, the 800 KG car puts 133% as much heat in the tire as the 600 Kg car. 133 = 800/600 BTW. Because the cars are at the same speeds over the same distances; all of what you propose, as making the problem hard, vanish.

While it is glorious for Max and Honda I'm starting to get bored with the dominance. Is that wrong?

Yes, it's wrong to begrudge dominance to those who do the best job. F1 is a meritocracy.

I do hope for stronger competition again next year. Max was inevitable this year, utterly faultless.

Mclaren look strong for next year and with some luck Ferrari does as well. 3 way championship? Sign me up.

I'm bored, but at least I'm not bored and annoyed like I was when the FIA favored Mercedes.

There's a bit of a difference between bored and begrudged. I know Max and Honda earned it. I'm not slagging the effort it took to achieve the results.

I love F1 and Ferrari in spite of the occasionally boring parades and lack of Ferrari competitiveness.

We just keep watching and hoping.

My visit to Maranello in 1997 for the 50th anniversary of Ferrari and meeting some team members and the rare evening tour of the factory are great memories.

But massive congratulations to Red Bull Honda and Max. Well deserved.

I was intrigued by how the Germans display the number 3 using their fingers (as displayed by Vettel in the pic). It was further eye-opening in the movie "Inglorious Bastards" as well in the cantina scene with the SS officer that gives away the British agent as he displays the number 3 not in the German way.

If it wasn't for inglorious basterds I would never have noticed it. Personally I use the ''traditional'' 3 center fingers instead of the ''german one''. With Max having grown up literally next door to the German border I wonder if it's more prominent in that side of the Netherlands/Belgium as well?

PS that scene is absolutely wonderful. As is everything about that film. Definitely a film I wish I could reset my memory for every time I watch it!

So the most restrictive regulations ever, with an engine freeze and an unprecedented budget cap, has produced one of the most uneven seasons ever.

I know that rule changes need some years to bring results, but this is not looking good.
