I never saw it, but first heard about it in middle 90's. I think there was a big push for it then or before. Even Miami Vice had in opening and then a couple episodes. Appears maybe just some limited pro Jai Alai in Miami plus some amateur. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jai_alai
It used to be HUGE in the gambling arenas in the 70's and 80's, then (IIRC) some 'fixing' was discovered and it kinda disappeared. It was only huge in South Florida, but it was HUGE there. Today, not so much.
For years it was only in Florida, then somehow Connecticut got involved. I saw some at the frontons in Ocala and Fort Pierce back in the day, but have not kept up on its current status. Of course, it's in better shape in Florida than dog racing, which was also pretty big in its day but now has completely disappeared.
I think it was the I-95 connection between the two... Dog racing was big here, so was horse racing, both now gone. If you go back to 1970, the four biggest sports were Indy car racing, horse racing, boxing and baseball, 3 of the 4 are non-factors today.
I somewhat remember the episode - blast from the past …. I’d like to see a match ( or whatever they call it ) someday MDS
there’s a good documentary on it, maybe by ESPN (?) basically ruined by the mafia and gambling. there was also a strike by the players which lasted long enough for interest to fall off. a lot of interesting characters involved… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Wheeler_(businessman)
