Road and Track had a nice article about the 1981 GP in Las Vegas, the one where Piquet clinched the title. Ah, nostalgia!

The differences between that race and what is being built today in Las Vegas are like lightyears apart. I'm not crazy about the ticket prices but I do think this race will look spectacular on TV.

They have to pay me to go to Vegas. Perhaps one of the ugliest western cities ever created.

Honestly, how could any fun loving adult hate Vegas? Sure I like a deserted mountain stream with big trout, but Vegas is fun and unique place in our country like new Orleans or NYC

Couldn't agree more. I wouldn't want to live there or go there on a regular basis but for once in a while Vegas is fun. Have been there several times, mostly when they added a new attraction to it. I'm not into gambling but I do love the themed hotels, whether it is Paris, Venice or Cesar's. And I have been to the real places, but Vegas is like Epcot on steroids in that regard.

Vegas is about as Far from NYC as you can get. Vegas has 3 things that I like.

    1. a full Joel Robochon restaurant ... I think the only one that is not an atelier in the world
    2. Qua Spa at Caesar's Palace.
    3. Jerry Seinfeld and some of my favorite Comedians play there... so that is nice, and easy to get up front seats.

otherwise to me its just a tacky, grimy gambling joint, that brings out all the worst attributes in people. There are a couple of nice watch stores too...

I literally dont know who is behind all this, but its literally crazy. I was just at the Ferrari Store here in Atlanta... they have some great Amalgam models, there... and there was one t shirt I wanted... but not in my size. the rest of the clothes... were so ugly and stupid... I dont know who would want them. $2500 for a sweater????

    Everyone's a millionaire from a Billionaire family now! :)

Ferrari is a 'Luxury' brand now. Their competition is LVM not RedBull or Honda lol. F1 might need Ferrari but Ferrari the luxury brand does not need F1 at all.

I don't hate it, I just find it boring and unworthy of my time being there.
    too hot
    too dry
    I don't gamble
So the only things in Vegas for me are drinks and food--too much of them too.

    Some people would
Spring mountain motor sports park! Go in winter. For F1 it will be less than 60F at night perfect walking weather. Greenberg great pastrami sandwich. Shooting sports. Lots there besides gambling. People just gotta find the fun. Some are even unhappy as they are getting a bj...can't help everyone...

    I love Vegas

I don't really gamble either.... maybe a few rounds of blackjack if I've been drinking, but it's not ever my focus or reason for the visit.

Golf is great. Restaurants are great. Shows/concerts great. Overall vibe is great.. lots of energy, especially if there is a big event going on.... love that the Raiders are there now, then hopefully they get MLB and NBA too.

And I'm older now, so not into the club/party scene...... but in my 20's I had some incredible bachelor party weekends there...... tons of fun with the right group of people...... and always lots of pretty girls there looking for fun if you're in the right situation for that.

How will they get traffic inside/outside the track? Is there a tunnel or bridge? Or will they just have sections of the track that traffic will drive across?

The Strip will be closed from something like 7 PM to 11 PM each night of the event. Like Monaco the streets will be open the rest of the time. There are large pedestrian bridges that cross over into the inside of the track.

The back side of the west strip hotels can be driven to on Frank Sinatra drive, the east by Audrey and Koval. The north above Sands and the South below Harmon (including CityCenter) are not affected other than traffic.

Its not that unusual that the Strip is closed for an event. New years, the marathon, 4th of July, etc. In fact they close off much more of it for these events. They know how to do it.

What they are working on now is how to shuttle hotel workers into the area. I believe they will park at the LV Convention center and take the monorail and buses to work. Luckily I can just walk down Paradise to Sands to get to the Sphere area.

Just seems crazy that they'll allow cars driving over the race surface. I'd think they would have re-paved the track with a nicer asphalt than everywhere else, then keep regular traffic off it

The asphalt used was created and supplied by the FIA. Its a special material that they believe will not need to be replaced for 6 to 8 years, including the Strip traffic all that time. No one really knows but that is what the engineers say. I've driven over the surface many times. Its pretty smooth but not perfect. At 200 MPH you're still going to feel some bumps.

Just returned from Vegas last night and it is getting crazier by the day. It appears they only resurfaced Vegas Blvd on the track side - that being TI, Mirage, Caesar's, etc. The other side, Paris, Bally's, Flamingo, etc. has not been resurfaced. The track will have perimeter lighting as shown in the photo attached. Pricing is out of this world. Our waiter at Sinatra's said most of the restaurants are totally booked that weekend so if you don't have a reservation you're relegated to eating fast food for dinner!

Yesterday locals could buy a seat for $200. I don't think that's outrageous.

Yes only one side of the Strip is resurfaced. To do both would have shut it down for months. There were times when they used the east side (going north) for traffic running north and south on the same time so the west side was free of traffic. Also the construction of the Horseshoe at Flamingo and The Strip was snarling northbound traffic more months.

People have been saying that for some time now. I tend to think that being in F1 is well and truly in their DNA. Plus if they have the sponsors, why not? Don't forget that on a world-wide basis Ferrari is mostly well known as a racing team that also sells some road car
