360 2002 360 airbag module throwing code

You know, I was going to post something similar. My wife noticed the warning on the sun visor of my F430 and it says the charge should be replaced every 15 years.

Usually, it's not that which throws the code though. I'm thinking something else might be up?

 

F355's have airbags which are nearly 30 years old and haven't caused issues. Just find someone with a Ferrari SD tool to find out which part of the system is faulty. It could be the driver's bag, passenger's bag, either of the seat belt pretensioners or wiring. There is a fuse behind the left hand seat, but I don't know if loss of power to the system will generate an airbag light. The fuse also powers the Suspension ECU (and you haven't mentioned suspension faults).

Even if you changed the bag, you will still need the SD tool to reset the airbag light. Cheap diagnostic tools are not going to reset the light.

 

Interesting. I'm not really sure what it would be communicating with, other than the OBD2 port (when in use).

The ECU does send a signal to the instrument cluster to tell the car about a crash, but I don't know if that can be classified as "communication".

I could ask you to reset a plug or two to see if anything changes, but even if that fixed the problem, you would still need to reset the ECU to get rid of the light.

e.g. connector 16C/3C under the dash (driver's side).

Here's a wiring diagram showing what the plug is hooked up to:

i.e. the instrument panel, the OBD2 port and system power.

You may need to identify the plug by using wire colours:

Red/black, grey/blue, orange/white and yellow/red on one side of the plug, red/black, grey/blue, yellow and grey wires on the other side.

Since there are no airbag trigger wires on that plug, you could just turn off the ignition prior to resetting that plug. If you reset the plug, maybe you could run your scan again to see if anything changes.

Unfortunately, the big plug on the ECU itself is not so easy to get to.

I think the concern was that it may not inflate properly. I did some digging though...apparently, when airbags were relatively new, manufacturers didn't have any data about longevity so most would place labels mentioning to replace the units every 15 years or so. Only around the early 2000's did car makers stop including these labels as data was coming in showing that older airbags did perform as intended and could do so for the life of the vehicle potentially. There is concern that over time the charge might lose potency though. Not sure what the effects would be of an airbag with a slow inflation rate, but I do know that airbags with delayed inflation can cause lots of bodily damage. At least for now, I wouldn't be concerned.
