I recall one year at Watkins Glen in October where we woke up to a brief snow shower…can’t remember the year (‘76; ‘77?) but our tent did have a very light dusting of snow on it!

I'll set the TIVO for that. Might as well be the Japanese GP.

I'm just waiting for some advertisement calling this race the first F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

    Nope, it's the third.

Which reminds me that the Mayor and I also have a disagreement on the numbering of the Star Trek movies as I count the ones from the eighties as well. ;)

This will be my THIRD Las Vegas F1 race. Not sure I will fit in my 1981 tee shirt. However the hat should still fit!

    Awesome!

I went to Las Vegas a couple weeks before the first race and saw the grandstands and the track at Cesars, but had to leave before the race. I was a huge Alan Jones and Williams fan at the time and I remember them having a mock Williams F1 inside the casino. Totally loved that. And what a race it was: title deciding between Laffite, Reuteman and Piquet (there was a recent article about it in Road & Track bringing back all the memories)

However I do have a clear collage guys memory of the Arrows team Sponsor Penthouse bring some of their talent to sign autographs! Along with Gilles being disqualified and Mario’s last F1 race.

So cool. I always love the F1 cars on display. Often the closest one ever gets to a real car (I know, not a real car but still).

I don't think this will be a one time event. It's gonna be on the calendar for at least a few more years. So get used to it. Maybe they will adjust the start time in the future.

There is a 10 year contract with F1 and Clark County Nevada. Liberty Media is spending almost $1B to create this event. There is a rumor they want F1 headquarters to move to Vegas.

    Would save on taxes!

Are the casinos taking bets on who will sing the National Anthem? I'm going to put $100K on it lasting 1:57. :D

Looks like a massive hotel workers strike could turn the F1 event into a "fast food and pitch a tent" weekend. Even if the race went on, the financial outlook for the event would be a disaster. People canceling reservations, hotel rooms and race tickets flooding the market at deep deep discounts, hookers lining the highway as they hitchhike back to LA. The labor movement in the US is in a Masada frame of mind these days...their lust for destruction hasn't been satiated with lessons from the other industry strikes.

Interesting article in RJ yesterday about plummeting hotel rates for F1 weekend. Caesar's, for example, down over 50% from initial offerings.

    Excellent.

They too will learn the hard lessons Austin's hotels did after the first race. People won't pay ridiculous prices and packages are really a PITA.

I'm guessing they will still do stupid stuff next year but thereafter it will be business as usual and thus affordable for the non hedgefund babies amongst us.

If Celine Dion was well enough, I would guess most would want her even though she's Canadian. She's been a local for over 20 years.

She’s been unwell though for some time. I saw a video of her recently and she looked pretty good.
