For instance: https://www.ebay.com/itm/195560183205 I don't know anything about the seller/watch/etc, but it seems like you could buy that, refurb it, get a great band, and still be within your budget. (fair warning, I have no idea if the price is fair). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I like both of your ideas, I bet he'd be stoked about either of them. If you want more suggestions to consider, a classic, understated dress watch may not be the hot item these days, but they look great with a suit and will never go out of style. A new VC Patrimony isn't way over your budget. Or you could find a cool vintage Patrimony or Calatrava or something along those lines. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I personally would be fascinated with a cool vintage watch given where I am along my watch fetish journey. But as a young guy just starting out and a watch marking a huge shift in life I think him getting a new watch to set its own “story” would be best.
He’ll be making enough money to buy whatever gadgets he wants, this is meant as a gift of heirloom status and to be of sentimental value decades later.
How about a JLC Reverso? He gets both a sports and dress watch in one. https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/us-en/watches/reverso/reverso-tribute/reverso-tribute-duoface-calendar-stainless-steel-q3918420
I really like this idea! Otherwise, VC is beautiful. I also do like what IWC has to offer in that price range. Maybe have him look at Panerai as well. Loads of young lawyers that I know seem to gravitate to that brand for whatever reason.
VC and JLC ultra thin look great, but I would suggest a JLC Master Control Calendar, which fits better on a young person imho, or a Reverso, both classic, under the radar and sporty. https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/ch-fr/watches/master-control/master-control-calendar-stainless-steel-q4148420 https://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/ch-fr/watches/master-control/master-control-calendar-stainless-steel-q4148480
My vote would be the VC 56 over the JLC. My direct experience: I owned the JLC Master Ultra Thin (Perpetual Calendar version) for a while and, while it was drop dead gorgeous, it felt to me like it was more suited to someone much older than even I am (late 40s)… I loved it (especially the perpetual calendar complication) but I never wore it as it didn’t really resonate with me. After I sold it, my wife confessed that it looked like an “old man’s watch” and didn’t really suit me. To me, the VC 56 strikes a good balance between elegant and “youthful” enough for someone just finishing law school. Either way you go, a huge congrats to the both of you and much success in his career!
So, my son loves what I have and do.....imitation best form of flattery.....what do you wear? That would be a great starting point...
Mostly VC (Overseas and Corne de vache) and Patek (5205G and Nautilus). I love VC because it feels more personal since it is less hyped. Hyped always carries this aura of maybe I own and wear it, in part, to impress others; and that is not me. A love of watches is deeply personal to me, dare I say intimate.
I’m toying with the idea of considering the VC Overseas (though the price point is closer to $25K) because it really is three watches in one. Leather strap when working, metal bracelet knocking about, rubber strap running, boating, or at beach.
I have the Overseas in SS with blue dial and it is truly mesmerizing… it may be a bit difficult to get at retail, but the gray market has come down a bit and will probably continue to by the time he graduates. If something in this price range is a possibility, imo hands down this wins over others that have been suggested already. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Image Unavailable, Please Login Love it! I have a steel with black and just a few days ago got the pink gold with blue dial. In bright light the blue explodes, but in low light it is a deep purple. My SA said only the pink gold ones look purple because of the pink gold reflection.
You, sir, are trying to open pandora's box! This is like asking: would you prefer a new Ferrari or a vintage Ferrari. Heck, if we go down this path, assuming a relatively formal office, you could get a bespoke three piece suit and a minute repeating pocket watch and probably not blow the budget. Personally, if vintage wristwatch is an option, I'd go 1940s - 1950s vintage round V&C or 1920s 'exploding numbers curvex Patek Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I always wear my VC on strap, seems to be more versatile… The Guilloche dial is amazing on the Overseas. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Love Vacheron! Amazing versatility, one watch with 3 completely different bands = 3 watches! lol Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
