F1 In Vegas?

I think the Las Vegas GP could be a grandiose final to close a seasonin view of the setting, and the quality of the organisation.

Making it an evening race, and so late in the season will probably curb the interest. Nevada in Summer is OK, in November not so much.

Forecasts of low temperature at night are worrying, for the drivers (tyres), and the spectators.

For TV viewers it will be alright. If they keep that GP on the calendar, they should change the date, IMO.

 

Pirelli will declare it too cold.

I think it will work out just like Miami

Just a fun event for VIP's that either get a free sponsor-funded invite or can spend the money to be there rubbing shoulders.

It's not about the race... so many people there that don't care about the game itself.

MET Gala... The Oscars... Superbowl... Monaco F1.... Cannes Film Festival.... Wimbledon.... etc.

Nobody mentioned or missed Monaco when it was not held due to COVID LOL. No event is the end all / be all of life. None. This is an event. Mostly forgettable at that. Just like Monaco was during COVID. No one cared.

 

I would be happy to see Monaco completely off the calendar. A great track to see an F1 car in qualifying, but a horrible track for racing.

Malaysia, Turkey, Hockenheim, Nurburgring. These tracks are much more welcome than a lot of the garbage we have now.

 

Monaco Classic is good enough for me.

 

Based on the focus of the conversation, it doesn't even sound like a race. They should cut the laps in half and refund half the ticket prices. Otherwise everyone will go inside the casinos and watch it on TV. The promoters in the 80s learned the hard way...F1 fans and Vegas don't mix...Netflix aside. $40 million bucks in tax payers' money to repave the streets is a disgrace. Vegas voters may decide that one year of this is enough.

And it’s the sponsors and VIP dollars that drive the sport. Not the “racing”

 

Its a party. Vegas is great at that

Giving people a reason to come spend money is always going to be good for Vegas

But as a fan of racing, Monaco is not a race I look forward to each year.

 

I walked the Strip today. We are READY. They've been testing the lights the last few days. Its amazing what has been done. This was built in front of the Venetian. Its a temporary structure with indoor dining, an outdoor bar, and elevated seats above the Strip.

It is not amazing what has been done...it is a scam and the taxpayers will get the ridiculous bill...and a soaking. Vegas makes its bread and butter on booze and slots. Race fans don't want to wander through a maze of slots and craps tables just to get to their seats. The backers will lose money and I have doubts they be able to sell this for a second year. The falling room prices are the tea leaves in the cup. Yes the promoters have a lot of fancy window dressing...lots of flash and bling...but inside the window is just an over priced cartoon of a race. Spending more money than they did in the 80s won't change the end result.

 

Not a scam at all. Liberty Media spent about $1B in Vegas employing thousands for over a year and supporting local businesses. Everything they bought had sales tax. That was part of the deal when they signed up. And the facility they built will be a year round tourist attraction for F1.

The county spent about $40M on the roads and infrastructure -- all of it remains after the race. The Strip got repaved (it really needed it), all over town businesses spruced themselves up (Circus Circus did a complete make over), Koval and Harmon roads are 10 times nicer now and better for local traffic when they leave. Its estimated that about $20M will go directly to schools from the event.

I really don't see a downside here. The government had almost nothing to do with the entire thing. And November is by far the least visited times of the year. Now, its one of the biggest.

As to "falling room prices" -- well even by falling they are 2 to 3 times more than they would have gotten the week before Thanksgiving. Did the resorts ask too much? Probably. But like everything in the free market, business adjusts.

And it didn't help that the entire year was a Max and Red Bull exhibition season. A lack of competitiveness hurt sales given its one of the last races this year.

 

Ditch Miami and Vegas. Bring back WG without the bustop.

 

It's still going to be busy in Vegas. More people are going that I know, some I sid not think liked F1 let alone pay these ticket prices.

 

Tix they say should go in your phone wallet. My wife bought the tickets and they are in her F1 ap and can't get them to move to her iPhone wallet. Anyone else have problems moving tix around? For over $2k you would think cheapo tix master could send the tix I bought months ago in the mail.

 

If there only could be prep races !!!! Maybe next year

They always spend a lot of money. And I still think it will be a flop. Yes, I don't like what F1 has become. A Liberty Media isn't saving it...it's just turning it into a carnival that has nothing to do with auto racing. All the billions hasn't improved the racing at all.

Amazing what has been done in this City in the short amount of time. Oh, but it's a Union Town, and that's what Unions do; get things done. How things turn out with the roller coaster ride of the FIA, and it's changing rules, F1 politics, and the RB dominance are unrelated to what has already been accomplished here. I'm ready to sit back and enjoy.

Convention organizers are seeing the struggles their attendees have had, and if F1 is back next year, they will move their shows to another city.”

“The casinos run this town,” another anonymous resident told me. “Liberty Media is used to bilking sponsors, municipalities, and remote race tracks. They are not accustomed to dealing with very high-powered corporations who are in the business of doing the bilking, not being bilked.

“If the casinos don’t see a massive recurring profit that offsets the pain from construction and teardown, then this race will be dead. No one gives a crap about the sport. No one.”

As the race approaches and local voices continue to go unheard, the frustration of inconvenience for many residents has turned to rage. As resident Celeste noted, “Someone here is making a lot of money off of this event, and it is not the residents of Clark County. We will have our pockets picked, paying taxes for the bill.”
