If you are looking for a M manual, there were only 93 that came to the US over the life of the M. All the non-M 456s were manual. The M 6 speeds are quite rare and commanding a roughly 2X price premium over non-M models.
Not true... about 400 of the 1950-ish GT cars were GTA automatics, in 1996-1997. US got only 95 and 97 models due to OBD2 change over requirement. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Laser - I have tremendous respect for you and what you’ve done for this community, but as someone who’s been in and out of the market, this sort of premium hasn’t been accurate for almost 3 years now. It’s closer to a 40-50% premium, which is still significant, but early 95’s no longer go for 40-60 in respectable running order.
Eric- As highlighted in the list above, quite a few US Motronic 5.2 456s were GTAs. All the 95s were manuals, but 97s and early 98s (pre-M) were a mix.
Agreed; I think it’s a selection bias as most the 456GT for sale in the US tends to be ‘95 and hence most GT you come across here are manuals. The OBD2 GT cars are comparatively rare.
My apologies to all and sundry. I sold my 456M 6 speed about three and a half years ago and it was at a premium as noted. Since, I've had a 575 and my comment about pre M 456s was more reflective of the 550/575 evolution. Entirely my bad and a rather significant brain fart.
I should also mention that I’ll pay up for a very well sorted example. I have 3 kids 5 and under so not a lot of free time. Prefer to have a car I can get in and go. So if you have an off-market car that you’d sunk a ton into and not selling because you’re upside down, feel free to reach out! Best, Josh
Great way to approach it. Avoid that low mileage Hot Potato, even if it has had “A RECNT MAJOR SERVICE !” If you intend to drive it anyway. Find someone who sorted one out properly already and pay $$ up. You are getting a bargain and saving a huge expensive (and long) headache. Service Record should INCHES thick at this point in any 456 for everything that requires maintenance, updates, replacement and/or a needed upgrades (cooling, etc…). This is all before sorting out the interior every few years or so. 2003 M - 29k miles. I wish you luck !
Great color but damn that may set the record for lowest non-accident hx sale. Any estimates? I say 38k.
I hope it does, but I fear apples for apples (ie only auto to auto) the M typically command a mild premium and no MGTA with that presentation/miles would sell that high. I hope I am wrong though! I get the feeling it’s an ongoing project whose nickel and diming has gotten the best of the current owner and now that the major is (over)due, time to dump and run.
Could be. And with economy turning/slowing you may be right. Rare color and fairly low miles might keep the price up a little. They just aren’t making anymore V12’s like this, and oddly enough I find many people don’t mind auto, as long as it’s a Ferrari… We’ll see; maybe I was being falsely optimistic?
For that matter…let’s say a guy already has a manual 2-seater but has 2 kids….an auto 456 would be sublime.
That is it 100%. That is me (one kid though). THEN factor in living in NYC / West LA and pushing 49 years of age. I happily HAPPLY hunted for and paid a premium for an M GTA over the regular GT. For me it was a no brainer and for a certain crowd the GTA is the last/real and best Ferrari to fill this niche. I have no problem with a F1 but the GTA is just so smooth and delivers the power so well. Drive a good one and see. I drive my shifter car maybe 150 miles per year. I run 8-10k average in the GTA. PLUS the three speed with overdrive is just a bulletproof overbuilt banger of a transmission. Put it in sports mode and leave it in third gear all over the city and then blast it straight up the coast.
Definitely a cool car, however I also agree with Auraraptor's comment: "I get the feeling it’s an ongoing project whose nickel and diming has gotten the best of the current owner and now that the major is (over)due, time to dump and run". The car itself needs a belt service, will need the headliner replaced, also for some reason when the glove box wouldn't shut properly, someone decided to screw in a bolt (through the leather and the glove box itself) in order to rectify the situation.
And those are ‘repairs’ you can see. Imagine the repairs/upkeep on everything you can’t…. Overall, I’m happy to the result. This sets a new floor for GTA cars!
