Hello, I just placed an order for a 296 GTB, I was looking at videos of the car online and noticed that carplay is covering the whole of the dashboard. Living in Europe, apps such as waze can help you keep your driving licence and have fun at the same time. Is there any way of having waze open and to see your tachometer? Thanks
I believe you may be able to see some kind of virtual tachometer with the HUD and also make sure to order the steering wheel LED rev lights. I agree its a bit of a shame that you can't have the giant tach display when the CarPlay is active.
Yep. That’s my understanding and so is the passenger display. Interestingly, passengers can control Apple CarPlay from their display. I think this is a new feature. I don’t think u can do that with the Portofino M passenger display, for example. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Full agree - keep it switched off which is a great shame and a really bad piece of design… the whole new user interface on the current generation of Ferraris leaves a lot to be desired - a combination of information overload and low usability… crazy at this level
CarPlay does overtake the dash display, however, you can see the tachometer readings (race style) via Race Mode in HUD. It’s not as pretty or gratifying as it is to see in the dash but a work around. Another work around is when you switch out of CarPlay to regular Ferrari display by pressing the home button, the turn by turn directions will appear in the dash on one of the four side areas; just the next turn details. Also, if you’re playing music thru Spotify, that also will appear in one of the four areas with album artwork. You can of course rearrange the side displays to show both these details in the left or right side. The real problem is not all this, clicking in and out of CarPlay or choosing anything from the myriad menu options using haptic controls while driving is a nightmare; u need the finesses of a Swiss watchmaker while trying to focus on the road. They seem to have addressed this issue on the purosangue steering wheel; some of the Haptic Touch controls have been replaced with buttons that you can click thru. Wish Ferrari would accept the full Haptic Touch steering wheel is a failure and swap out for free. But we all know that ain’t happening… ever [emoji16].
CarPlay works just fine. It hangs out in the right side menu, and it can take over your screen if you want it to. A long press of the Home button returns you to your Ferrari tach view. Mine stays in the background for nearly my entire drive. Navigation directions overlay in one of the display 'slides' that @ATLBond referred to, as does music etc. It's not at all finicky and integrates into the Ferrari display UI. If you absolutely must stare at your CarPlay screen, then the suggestion of using the Race Mode tach is a good way to accomplish that. Steering wheel and mirror control panel touch response is hit or miss for me, but I rarely screw around with them while driving. I use the little levers on the back of the steering wheel for volume & music control.
Not having the tachometer while CarPlay is active is a major fail. Does this mean that the music must simply be played through the phone with a physical input cord?
CarPlay can be active in the background and you can still enjoy most of its features like streaming music, telling Siri to call, etc. However, in certain situations like when a call comes in, Apple CarPlay display will automatically pop-up on dash and you have to long click the home button to go back to traditional Ferrari display. If you don’t want to activate CarPlay but just stream music, I suppose you disable CarPlay mode and stream music thru Bluetooth. Never tried this myself. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Also, if theres an alert and the screen flips to CarPlay, if you dont do anything, it will go back to the tach screen. Im not sure what else they could have done aside from put a large central screen in the car. And I find the system does work well enough, and is no more or less finicky than the prior setup. I just know that system better. I also do prefer the physical tach. However I wouldnt want to let my being a little bit unhappy with a screen keep me from enjoying these cars. Thank you so much!! I had no idea I could use CarPlay and have a tach simultaneously until your post. Today was a great drive!! Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
@bamaman Not sure if you saw the few posts above or if the definition of 'active' is what's creating the confusion. I'll try to keep it short so it's clear. As @ATLBond and others have stated: CarPlay can be connected and running in the background with navigation guidance and music functioning in the background as well. While CarPlay is in the background, you can still view navigation guidance & music selection in one of the 4 info cards You can dismiss CarPlay from taking over the foreground of the display if it pops up while you drive due to an incoming message or call by holding the Home button, which is in thumbs reach on the steering wheel If you would like to have CarPlay in the foreground taking up most of the display, then I'm not sure what the complaint is about simultaneously showing a tachometer (which can be available in the HUD too). If you wanted Ferrari to somehow shrink CarPlay to exist in a smaller window, then the value of the information in CarPlay comes into question. Ferrari isn't going to give you a bad tachometer and a tiny and illegible view of CarPlay. At that point, I think you probably should have considered an 812, 12Cilindri, or a Purosangue. The choice not to add a center screen was the right one for this type of mid-engine supercar.
I think the biggest "issue" with CarPlay is the lack of handover skills from the dealers, the lack of a PDF manual with examples and the lack of on-line videos from Ferrari, or in the App, to show people how to use it they way they want. Oh, and the lack of a button or two, instead of the haptic controls!
I’m not sure if my 2024 296 GTS has CarPlay? It’s not on the options list but the iPhone that’s connected to the car lists the car as one of the CarPlay connections where I could click “Customize” or “Forget.” And I can’t find anything in the car to actually launch the CarPlay.
I think it became standard for 2024 models, at least in the US. If you see your phone on your dashboard, try to add it. It should work.
Hi everyone, A few of you said you could use CarPlay in the background and still see the navigation guidance on the side display. For me it’s only true if I use the factory navigation. If I set a destination in Google maps in CarPlay and switch back to the tachometer view, I always get the Spotify info on the side display. I can’t find a way to keep CarPlay in the background and have anything else than Spotify on the side. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Another annoying thing is ADAS. By default it keeps beeping whenever it sees any road sign. I can turn it off, but the car won’t remember the settings and I have to activate my custom ADAS settings each time I start the car. Is this the way it is supposed to work?
I can’t speak as to the exact settings, but once I turned off all the beeping things and the speed limit detection stuff, it stayed off.
Could be difference between euro and USA regulations concerning ADAS. My usa car leaves ADAS off on start ups. SV
