You gonna pull the trigger? That was next on my wishlist but getting cold feet.

 

Not pulling the trigger, I think the market is a little tough for these high end watches right now. Over $100k the market gets real thin and over $200k even more so. Money no object I would be buying this watch all day long. I think it’s fantastic. Anyone with money burning a hole in the pocket DM me, happy to connect you.

 

Im tight on funds at the moment for toys- but waiting on the April releases to see what Patek brings about. once that comes, will figure out what the next step is to add. Becoming more and more selective as I dont have any serious needs/wants right now

 

I’m just learning about Patek as my watch interest and collecting is growing.

Went to the local boutique/dealer (only one in 6 states the guy said). He literally showed me 4.5m dollar grand complication they sold this year

I’m not totally sure about many of the ones I saw being my style but he said the sports ones (nautilus and aquanaut) have wait lists in the hundreds?

after about and hour he said “let me put you down for a couple models” but seems like I should not hold my breath.

any advice or insight from those in the know would be greatly appreciated

 

Dont waste your time with ADs. If you really want something just go gray/reseller. Most Pateks will trade below MSRP anyway outside of a handful of models. Otherwise they will have you buy a bunch of what you dont want with the implication (but no promises or certainties) that just a few more purchases and the nautilus will soon be yours. It's generally a scam.

 

Personally, I wouldn’t buy any watch an a ‘investment’ so, with that in mind, what is important to you? If you need that new watch smell, order something from the AD. For me, it’s waste of money. I also scratch my head at the Patek ‘sports’ concept. It’s just not Patek’s space. I suggest buying something other than what everyone else is buying.

Paid a little visit to the AD yesterday, put in a bunch of orders and picked up a new watch for the Mrs. I love the “linen” dial.

I respectfully disagree with most of what was written here.

I think a long term relationship directly with Patek through your local AD will provide more long term benefit and satisfaction than buying grey market watches without perfect provenance.

Yes, you may buy some entry level watches, but it’s ok to have some of those in the collection and there is no requirement to be able to flip a watch on day one for a profit. This isn’t a business, it’s a hobby and if you buy right it will create a collection which will have value and gradually appreciate over time. They are also objects that can be passed down and cherished by others if that is something you might be interested in doing.

Just today I paid a visit to my AD, the expectation is that most of the watches I have ordered will in fact be delivered over the next few years. The green dial 5270p I posted above is a while away so I was asked if I wanted a different application piece in the meantime. I said sure and asked what was available and there was a 5270J. Now this is definitely not a watch I could flip for profit or even break even on day one but I don’t care. It was unsealed in front of me, I will own the watch from new and adding another application piece will further my relationship with Geneva. I’m going to have it fitted on a large scale, navy alligator strap and I think it’ll look a little younger and sportier than on the more traditional mid tone matte brown.

We were discussing minute repeaters and lunch with Thierry Stern and trips to Geneva so that was fun too.

like those who dont get vintage cars, i dont get expensive watches.
plz explain.

 

It’s a fair question. I find mechanical watches to beautiful and satisfying objects. They are tiny little machines that perform functions mechanically. I love the craftsmanship, I love the attention to detail, I love the way they look and feel. imagine being put in a workshop and being told to build a machine to tell the time with two chimes like a minute repeater does, I could come up with a spreadsheet that could give the right numbers of dings and dongs, but now think of creating a machine to do that and these movements were invented hundred years ago, it really shows incredible ingenuity.

Just like luxury cars, I can remember when I had nothing and I would admire beautiful watches on the wrists of others and aspired to having such a watch. Wearing a beautiful watch gives me pleasure every second it’s on the wrist. I think the watch you wear is a reflection of who you are, of what you value, of what you appreciate. I like that most people don’t value mechanical watches. I do and I respect and enjoy the company of others that do. It’s also one of the few accessories/jewelry pieces that a man can wear and I think you can tell a lot from the watch that someone wears. I don’t mean that in a pejorative way like if you’re wearing a Casio or an Apple Watch that means you are lesser of a person, it just means you are maybe practical. I think a mechanical watch shows a sophistication that an apple watch doesn’t. I own an apple watch and wear it often by the way. I’m rambling, I will let others chime in too. Hopefully some of this makes sense.

 

You can't explain expensive watches in the same way you can't explain expensive cars. The love for them will even grow the more you learn about them just like anything that is beautiful, expertly designed and manufactured.
