This was my impression as well, and the reason I probably overpaid for my 964. I agree with vrsurgeon that the 991 is the more comfortable high speed cruiser, but the change in size ultimately changed the entire car. I could see having a 991 and 911/964/993 in the garage without feeling I had two of the same car.

Just my experience but had a 993, regretted selling it and had a hard time finding another so bought a 997.2.

All that did was make me miss the 993 more so sold that and (happily) back in a 993.

I've got a 997.1 and my wife has a 996. The older they get the more they scratch the "old 911" itch for me, and lately I've been feeling like I might never actually get that air cooled car I've always dreamed about.

The rear wheel steering tech that Porsche offer on some of the newer cars does help disguise the much longer wheelbase, but I agree that the new cars have less "911-ness" compared to the older ones.

Never selling either 911, whoever handles my estate will be stuck with that task.

When I sold my 993, the buyer from LA was replacing his 996, which had been stolen. It was a quick sale at my full asking price.

    Prior to the 996, he’d had a 993.

Nice. At some point I'd like to drive a 997 as I hear lots of positive reviews, especially the .2 just to see what it's like, but I'm definitely an old-school fan more than anything.

A good friend of mine has a 1996 993 C4S he's had for years, can't imagine he'd ever give it up. It's the 911 I'm most familiar with besides my own, having driven it and ridden in it any number of times. I really like the platform; still an air-cooled car but it felt much more "modern" than my 1986 car, even though there were only 10 years between the two. With the 964 and into the 993, Porsche did a fine job updating the old platform but staying true to concept, especially looking back from today I think.

First 911 I ever drove was an arena red 96 993. Beautiful car.

The “modernization” from the 911/964 to the 993 was noticeable. I’ve had a 993 and now a 964. The ergonomics of the 993 are pretty normal, in that someone new to Porsche could get and drive without coaching. The handling is much more forgiving. The 964 has the traditional idiosyncratic controls, but vastly better HVAC — definitely true to the concept. I was looking for another 993, but I’m extremely pleased a great 964 crossed my path during the search. I actually prefer the original body style over the 993.

If I were still in perfect physical condition, I’d probably go 930… the 964 is about as “modern” as I’d want. But 993 is a great choice — the click when you close the door is still definitive. A forever/keeper car.

It's funny how Porsche people comment on that door click. I had to get into the 911 for something yesterday, and proceeded to open and shut the door an extra time just to listen to that sound again.

Anytime I shut the door on an 80s Testarossa - and I love TRs! - but it makes me think of shutting the door on an 80s Camaro.

It's a constant reminder of the build quality of German cars of that era. The Mercedes SLs of the '80s and earlier had a similar precision. Expensive cars, but it always felt like the value was there. Someone cared. Singer's motto is that "Everything is Important", but I feel like that applies to Porsche and Mercedes back then. Even the boot lid on a 560 SL is a pleasure.

I went to look at a Ferrari F430 a couple of years ago, and when I lifted the driver's door handle it felt like pulling a cable almost out of adjustment. I later read that those are an eventual failure point on the F430. To me, it's like visiting a prospective house purchase and having the front door sloppy on its hinges.

I always felt that way about the quality and particularly the smell of the leather on the older Mercedes specifically from the 60’s and 70’s. I have never encountered another car that had leather that was equal.

The 991 is the sweet spot IMO. Owned almost every 991 at this point with my most current a NA GTS.

I wanted to love the 997 but they feel so chinsey, and compromised to thr 991, even the pdk in the 997 is not on par with 991. Still love all gens, they all have their unique charms but the more time passes the more I recognize the greatness of the 991.

You really can't go home again, 37-year old 911 edition.

I was in the area, so I stopped by the old dealer location that was Ed Byrnes Porsche Audi Chevrolet back in the 80s, where my car was originally bought by the guy I bought it from. Decades ago the dealership was sold and is now part of some conglomerate, and Porsche has of course gone their own way with dealerships.

The showroom is still there, remodeled; it’s smaller than I remembered, no surprise there. Back in the 80s, it was all dark carpet and wood paneling, and the patio area out front had new/used Porsches of the era. My route to high school drove past it and every day I'd anticipate seeing what was out front. Now it's just a bunch of Chevy appliances that no one will likely remember or care about.
