My ABS light came on and according to the SDX the scavenge pump is not operating. It appears that the ABS units are no longer available, and even when they were, were rather high priced. There are other options out there as well, but since I am not a self-absorbed youtuber and get special treatment, I have decided to take matters into my own hands.

@vrsurgeon has a great thread on how to replace the unit, so I will not be going into all of the details on that.

Instead, I will be attempting to rebuild the unit. It is a Bosch unit, and I have a hard time believing that the components are bespoke to Ferrari. It appears the Audi A4 has a similar setup from Bosch.

I am going into this relatively blind and intend to learn along the way. Any insight into the scavenge pump and part interchangeability is greatly appreciated.

Currently I am still removing the unit. It appears the nut of the far side of the unit is seized to the stud. I will be removing the wheel well in an attempt to detach the whole cradle for the unit. Image Unavailable, Please Login

I appreciate that and will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you!

I know that the brake fluid wasn't changed for a long time, so I want to make sure that the thing isn't just gummed up.

I have the apparatus out. Now to figure out what a scavenge pump is and why it isn't working.

I'm assuming that the cylinder on the back is the pump. By disconnecting the wires and simulating a power source, it would not do anything, regardless of how much juice i gave it, leading me to believe that the pump is fried. So I need a pump. Thankfully I know a guy lol

I was planning on this taking the whole night so I guess I should go somewhere and pound a hole in my liver or whatever normal people do on New Year's Eve. Image Unavailable, Please Login

I can't find that motor plug in the wiring diagrams. Does it plug directly into the module itself?

I would imagine that it would be specifically from Bosch and that the service manual says to replace the whole unit instead of repairing it, the same way they do with F1 components.

I hooked up the audi unit to the power supply and it fired right up. The plug looks pretty much the same, although I didn't have time to pull the motor off and make sure that the output shaft is the same. It should be. The unit looks pretty much identical.

There is a 30+ hour blizzard going on and I have a full liquor cabinet, so let's go a little deeper. I had hoped I could swap the guts, but that appears to not be the case. The Ferrari motor is full of rust and has some resistance moving. This car spent it's life along the coast with owners who probably make more in a month than I do in a year, so perhaps that salty air got in. Hopefully I cam clean up the internals, get it rotating freely and see if it will work. Image Unavailable, Please Login

It appears that the motor failed because the bracket holding the magnet in place was no longer capable of doing so. By swapping the Ferrari rotating assembly in the audi housing (it wouldn't fit) I could feel it starting to go. I think if I swap in the audi brackets it should work. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Unfortunately after further testing, it appears the pump will need to be replaced. 14/15 times it will work just fine, but that one time it needs to be manually turned to start moving. The motor itself would need to be rewound. Had the magnet brackets not given out, it still would have failed shortly after. Back to the drawing board.

    Bummer.

Does the Ferrari part end in 281? I can't quite tell from your earlier pic. If so that matches an Audi part number that uses different motors depending on whether it's a Bosch 5.3 or 5.4 system.

Can't it be repaired by the folks that repair/refurbish alternators and starters?

I considered that option, however I have a couple other ideas I want to look into.

Have you looked at a unit from a Maserati 4200 ?
