Hi everyone, the check engine light in my 2011 Italia is on. I had my car scanned and the DTC that is kicking off is P0128 indicating a thermostat issue. I'm not seeing very much in the forum related to this code. I'm wanting to check if anyone in the 458488/F8 forum may have experienced this one and the end result. Thanks.

Any temp issues with engine or heater?

So far, no. I only drove about 5 miles to home after the check engine light came on.

Pretty common on f430 ..takes too long to heat up ..most likely a lazy spring or slightly stuck(open) thermostat. Does the coolant take a long time to get to normal range..does it go down as soon as you drive ?

Thanks flas32, that's good feedback. I will check it out once the weather clears up. I'm thinking to just change the thermostat. Looks like it comes from Ferrari with the housing and not just the thermostat. Your thoughts? Thanks.

I would see how the temp gauge looks like on your next start up and drive .. eventually probably beat to change it along with sensor. Not a cheap job ..part is mid 200s and sensor is like 30 .. most places will charge over 3 hours of labor.

I've learned not to trust any dashboard warning light from any European automaker unless I actually experience a driving difference. If I check my oil and other fluids routinely and they're good....and the car is driving normally otherwise, I just ignore the lights because the warning lights typically go away the next time I start the car up. From my 50 years of experience driving Euro makes, their sensors are nearly always TOO sensitive or broken. Right now I have a coolant light on my 2022 Audi RSQ8. The coolant is fine, it's not low or gone bad. Nothing wrong with it. I'm quite certain the light will go away in a few days. Faulty electronics/sensors etc. seem to be endemic to European makes. I've seen it since 1972 across all types of European makes.

Hi everyone, I'm just getting to look into the P0128 (Thermostat) DTC with my car. I checked the coolant reservoir bottle and noticed that it was empty. I filled it with water (I'm planning a coolant flush as soon as the DTC problem is figured out) and let the car run about 10 minutes.

The temperature reached about 170 degrees (F). I noticed water leaking out of the side of the coolant reservoir bottle. It has a hole in it.

I'm thinking this may have been caused by the thermostat not opening up and maybe causing pressure to build up and caused the reservoir bottle to burst.

Does that sound reasonable? I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

If the thermostat was stuck you would have been overheating not under temp

I will say it is possible the low temp was caused by the low coolant .. coolant not sufficient to cover sensor ..but doubt it

I would fix leak ..fill and observe again ..I am still thinking you need a thermostat but an easy test

Yea, good point - Thanks. The water was not moving in the reservoir bottle that should be an indication that the thermostat is closed, as well..

Hi triathgeek,it was only your bottle and nothing else that caused it?
    Thanks. It'll work out.

There was a slight leak and replaced the cap. Later on there was still a slight leak and that’s when the deteriorating tank was replaced. It never had a dash warning light or overheating; wasn’t a thermostat in my case.
My NSX tank had the same issue and a used Miata we had for a few years also had a failing tank replaced. Both were caught before things going south. They were kind of chalky/flakey.
We may have had different issues but check your tank and cap anyway. They weren’t terribly expensive. Hope this helps.

It helps. Thanks very much triathgeek. I think I am going to go ahead and just replace the thermostat along with the tank and cap.

Hi everyone, I have the old coolant tank out of my 2011 Italia. I am ready to change the thermostat and hose that runs from the coolant tank to the water pump on my 2011.

I am looking through the 458 service manual and it is giving instruction to remove interior panels (section E4.04) and the engine inspection hatch (section E4.06). I really don't want to get into removing interior panels if I don't have to.

Anyone, know if the thermostat and coolant tank/water pump hose can be changed from underneath the car by removing the main under body tray instead of messing around with the interior panels and engine inspection hatch? Thanks.

Hi everyone, for the record, I am done with coolant tank and cap, thermostat and temperature sensor on my 458. I want to confirm that I was not able to do so without

Hi everyone, I am done with coolant tank and cap, thermostat and temperature sensor on my 458.

For future reference, I saw a video by Normal Guy Supercar that he was able to change the thermostat from underneath the car on a F430. I was not able to do so from underneath my 458. My hands were to big. I had to remove the engine inspection hatch like the fsm instructed.

While I was at it, I went ahead and changed hoses (part #s 262476, 86091700, 266873 and 268188) since they were accessible with the engine inspection hatch removed.
