Is there a difference between the gearbox or clutches in a speciale and Italia 458? The speciale I tried seem to have difficulty starting out at low speeds, doesn’t quite hook up like it’s trying to slip the clutch, especially in reverse, while the Italia felt very natural starting off and putting down power. In fact the speciale stalled on me while braking to a stop in reverse. Anyone with speciales out there who experience this?

These cars should never stall. Sounds like there is something not quite right.

Should not stall under any circumstances, if so, there must be an issue with the speed sensor and Clutch itself shouldn’t have any abnormal wear in these cars: according to Ferrari, clutches should last forever. L

Unfortunately Speed sensor will fail on all cars who mount these GETRAGs gearboxes: Ferrari, Mercedes, BMW…

I would not buy a 10 year old 458 that did not go through gearbox rebuild.

    I had a 2015 Italia and then now have a 2015 speciale.

No difference in gearbox other than software upgrades in the speciale.

I pulled the exhaust valves in both and you can notice a slight loss of low end torque with open valves which makes things feel a bit smoother off the line.

Valves closed the speciale was a bit more jumpy and impatient at lower speeds, but otherwise cars feel quite similar.

Something doesn’t sound right with the car. Never had a stall much less a hiccup with either car.

how do you know if the speed sensor is failing? Does the gearbox throw faults or do you just observe symptoms?

The car seems to be a little rough rev matching while in motion at parking lot speeds.

A bunch of 458’s speed sensors failed and the fact that car stalls, means that ECU doesn’t know exactly pinion’s accurate speed.

Bad news is that you need to open gearbox to find out, good news is that it is fixable.

FFs, 458’s and first 488’s have same speed sensor weakness, alongside an internal seal that allows high pressure side oil leak towards the low pressure.

Apart from that bullet proof gearbox.

good to know dct may have faulty sensors. Stalling and weird throttle behavior seems more probable to be MAF sensor though https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/engine-warm-up.432665/

Speciale definitely shifts noticeably rougher than the Italia. For example when coming to a stop or slowing down, downshifting into second is mostly a smooth transition in the Italia, where as in the Speciale if you command a downshift in lower RPM range, the shift will be jerky. When driving in a more sporty manner, the Speciale is smooth but with a bit of a “kick” when upshifting.

Interesting. It felt like the car hunts around at low speeds and doesn’t know how to rev match, especially starting off in 1st while rolling. Occasionally there’s like a half second delay before it decides to go. On cold start car was in auto and I started off and it didn’t want to shift out of first even after 4K rpm with moderate pedal - I saw auto was flashing but I can’t remember if I tried to make it up shift sooner.

Also at moderate throttle input it shifted rather lazily like a manual shift or a slush box automatic and frequently, keeping revs around 3k but I guess you can’t compare it to a 2024 Macan pdk which basically has instant shifts.

Speciale gearshifts are completely different in race mode when you give a full send
