Better angle and of course I switched the tail lights around and replaced the mufflers. Image Unavailable, Please Login
You really think that light was added by the factory? Only one in existence I think. Or likely added by the dealer?
I removed the inside panelling in the trunk and the wiring comes out of the factory body harness sheathing and goes to that light. No overlaid wiring anywhere. A 76 boxer I restored also had a single rear fog, factory wiring in the harness from the console to the rear plug at the clamshell. Its the only boxer I've seen with the rear fog wiring but I know others exist. Typically boxers have an 8 position hardshell connector at the tail light with one unused spot, this one used all 8. No question the wiring in my 400i is factory, I doubt its the only one though.
Only after owning my 400 for six months, I realized the rear lens were reversed when sitting next to my 328. I decided to change them to the orange lens on the outside. While the red brake lens on the outside seems more logical, Ferrari must have had some reason for the orange turn signal on the outside. Possibly, when viewed from the side, someone can see the turn signal is on. Anyone know why orange is on the outside?
To me it makes sense that the signal light would be in the outer location. The reasoning I read that the lights had to be swapped for North America is the park lamps being inboard gives the illusion the car is further away in the dark than it really is. I guess thats possible. The side effect of moving them to the outside was some DOT shops could use the visibility of side of the red light as a replacement for the side marker light. In Canada my BB and 400i both had the lights swapped to meet our low standards. Thankfully no hogging holes in the bodywork took place.
Not sure if the red lens on the exterior is a US requirement as my 88 328 came with the orange lens on the exterior.
