I was thinking the same thing. This appears to be a really good one. Seller seems to be transparent and upfront. Modulars should add $15-20k to the result.
It’s interesting… having Modulars on mine I’d love to think sales prices reflect their replacement cost, but not so sure whether their value isn’t “blended in” to final sales prices and not fully “added on”.
In this case it should be added on since the original wheels are included with the sale. Obviously you could immediately sell the modulars and return it to stock.
I have almost never seen modifications provide meaningful supplemental value. The wheels should’ve been sold separately IMHO. And this from a guy who has a highly “optimized”/“modified”/“molested” (choose your word of choice) 575.
that's why this is an interesting case. I've seen 550's with modulars, but I haven't seen one come up for sale. And this one comes with the original wheels. In theory you could recoup at least $15k of your purchase the same day that you take delivery.
Having spent 20+ years (a previous life) in the aftermarket world, I would agree. Its rare that aftermarket parts add any value, they typically make a car less appealing to the masses and narrow the bidding/buying pool. There are exceptions. One of my closes friends is the founder of GuntherWorks. He started Vorsteiner before that and when I had my shop, we worked as one of their partners to provide cars for development and initially market the parts. My e46 M3 Cab is still all over the web as the poster car for the line, lol. They built CLK63 BS parts and e46 M3 race bumpers/wings for us... (ok, I have ADD and drifted off track). Point was even when he started Gunther, I told him he was crazy. I was then VP at Cosworth and working with Singer on the engine program so he really wanted to know if I thought Singer was a one off or if there was a market. I told him just what I wrote above "nobody will pay that kind of money for a modified Porsche - Singer is all hype right now and it will fade" Well.... one of the most wrong things I have ever said! Peter is now sold out with every GW he makes and they resale for more than Singers. So there are examples when the combination of 1+1=10, but typically it is 1+1=0.9 I think the wheels will add almost as much as they are worth, but it will be interesting to see the end. The market right now SUCKS. But this is the best of all of the 550s of late. But there seems to be an endless supply of 550s ATM on BAT. So your guess is as good as mine!
I think that’s why so many guys take them off and sell with regular wheels…unless you have the window sticker and it shows it came with them originally and even then separately they can bring strong money.
After owning them for years, I am finally getting around to putting my Novitec NF2s on the 550. I have in the back of my mind that I would need to pull them off and sell separately if I ever decide to liquidate...
Nice car...with the most boring color combo one could imagine for a 550 IMHO. Others may disagree and vote with their bankroll. In that case $175K will be easily surpassed. If the recent market is any indication...and if it was black, it would pull another $100K over that.We shall see...
One man’s boring as another man’s iconic color. Silver has a rich history in the media and ultimately, these are all cars of nostalgia/desire/irrationality. Personally, favor darker colors but one can argue the lines are beautifully visible.
Many buyers would not own a black car and I am sure different folks feel the same about other colors.
May the market debate continue… https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-ferrari-550-maranello-31/#comments-anchor 1999 550 w 9,600 miles Low options plus 19” Modular’s. RNM $215k….. ZFFZR49A0X0116990
I dont think the modular worth was reflected in the price at 215 though I didnt read closely to see the service hx/last major date/etc
Major and a lot of other work done 1 day ago. Car needs nothing. I would not sell for less then 250K, but the market right now for used cars is horrible. Interesting that it is so volatile in just a few months.
Then that was a great deal for the buyer. Good pick up. Even the included 18s appear to be the correct revised (not recall) 18s.
I'm not going to debate your $250 number, but it is amazing how in early COVID before the "covid madness" a low mile yet low optioned car like this might not have pulled $120k-ish. Lets agree with your $250 number and acknowledge a nearly "doubling" in a relatively short period of time. The fact that it pulled over $200 is great. That being said "the Porsche" situation is also still amazing. A lot of guys cry "still undervalued" and its hard to argue...but wow....$200k+ is a lot of shekels for mere near-mortals.
Would it have though? I bought my 575 in 2019 and I distinctly remember 550s were 140-160 for sorted high teens/low 20k mile cars and 180+ for well sorted sub 10k mile cars.
I hear you, but its not just the 550 that has seen this happen. Look at Murcielagos and I am sure a ton of other exotics. Also, have you see the MSRP on cars now? A G63 starts at like 180K. A base 911 is $115k (140-150K with reasonable options). I could look up 100 examples likely that have seen the same or similar climb in recent times. As to $250, this car would have likely taken MORE than that in q4 based on BAT comps.
In comparison to now…. mid 2019-maybe-mid 2021(?) felt way soft Those of us that bought in your noted 2019-ish window should feel real good. We should all want to feel as good as @dhalperin13 and @SteveVT Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looked back - I got it in 2020 not 2019; your right in 2019 was great time to buy. It’s when I bought my 512TR…
Super duper special cars will continue to do well, there's money out there. Merely great and below not so much until that first interest rate cut. Nostradamus told me.
