there is a very good reason if they did that: block is aluminium, sleeves are cast iron for all two liters V8 engines. Aluminum is much a better heat conductor than cast iron... That's to improve cooling capacities and above all to reduce pistons and sleeves surface temperatures. Ciao
There is a huge power difference between the two cars and at mid-low RPM 328 looks even more powerful than the 20% advantage it has on paper: I had both cars at the same time, so I know very well them. I'm talking about two perfecyly tuned and still like new cars: maybe the 328 you drove had some problems. This said, 308 carbed have something special, but that's about feelings, not about real performances Ciao
Comparing a 308 GTB with a 328 GTB is like comparing a Dino 206 GT with a 308 GTB: 308 GTB is much better everywhere. But the Dino 206 GT is the Dino 206 GT and not a 308 GTB... Feelings. Ciao
imho: Better? Faster? Just slightly different to me. Some body changes over the years. Points & carbs Vs. electronic & injection. Subtle changes to the chassis & interior. All refinements that come from evolution over ~ a decade. And of course, the maintenance differences, but I wouldn't push any IC engine when cold (or gearbox). On the tracks with car clubs, they're all in the same boat. The gentleman's sporting arrangement was to lift off the throttle to allow safe passing. This was absolutely necessary for the cars mentioned in this thread. Now, an F40/F50/288/996/AMG/Veyron/Viper, etc, would casually fly by with the throttle planted as if you were on the brakes. Now those cars are faster. At the Hillclimb events, the times for all of these 3X8 cars and the Mondials would all jockey back and forth with a tight data spread. My point is you like what you like. I love the 328, and I love the 308GT4 and appreciate them very much for what they are. Also, I would be reluctant to drive either in any casual sense. The attention they call and other drivers who don't feel grateful when they get their car home unscratched and tucked in under the car cover.
The real so called Ferrari Step-child was non other than the 246GT, truly the most beautiful Ferrari produced!
Yes, the 328 v. 308 in terms of power and torque are different. the gearing is different in the 328 and takes advantage of the increased torque in the 3.2 engine. The 308 engines just seem breathless under 4500 rpm... and given the age i always hated to rev it too high... with the 328 - the torque is what you notice first. The other thing in the 328 that i liked better than the 308 was parking lights. in the 308 - the lights pop up even when using just parking lights ... in the 328 they dont, and you also have fog lights that you can use a dusk... small silly details but still there. my 308 however shifted way nicer than my 328... driving the 308 in the mountains on two-lane roads was great. the GTB vs GTS are about the same there is more twist and lean in the GTS - its very noticeable. In the GTB - especially on track they handle so differently ... with the GTB way more aggressive. while no stock 308 is a track screamer, they can be fun, and the gtb is the one to have for the track.
the US specification 76-77 engines had euro specification camshafts and slightly more power than 78-80 US cars
That was true in the 80's. Ancient history. Now they are celebrated. Step children do not sell for nearly a million dollars.

"Modern cars may be quicker and more comfortable, but not as much fun." Similar to the original question, "fun" is just as subjective as "best" and not easily covered by such a blanket statement. I absolutely love taking the 308 out for an afternoon in the twisties, but ride along with me in my wife's Audi S3 on a mountain pass where the road twists and turns like an old goat path, and I'll show you how little fun a modern car can be....paddle shifters and all.
Financially the 308 has a higher percent appreciation possible as it closes in on 328. The 328 will have less maintenance and has more fun for new owners and as it should not apprecaiate this much it is now competeing with F430 cars! Old and analog. Read the many 328 posts and it is tough to find the big problem. There is none. Many issues are grease and rubber that are old, dry or cracked and almost 40 years old = normal
Super low clearance modern car makes the 328 with normal high clearance the more friendly car in town .
politely disagree Hmmmmm, my Dino revs at 5000rpm so nice, much lighter and smaller and I must say, much better feeling raw, than the 328
Regardless of what model it is I think it comes down to those that want to deal with the monkey business of a carb'd car vs those that don't. Whichever category has more buyers will determine the price - supply and demand. Injected boxers used to languish behind the "coveted" carb'd versions, that has changed over time. Im still stuck in the carb'd group with 70's switchgear but that might change as I age and then when I have to roll out of the car to get myself out, I'll know I need to abandon them completely.
I have to say that even though my 328 has a Tubi and a test pipe, its never going to sound as good as a carbureted 308. I say this to myself every time I hear one on You Tube. Im not sure if I have heard said 308 with an aftermarket exhaust, but I can imagine it would sound even better. My first love will always be with a 308 . I can remember telling myself I had to have one from the first time I saw one. If I had come across one in the same manner I did when I found my 328, I would have bought it. To this day every time I see one up close, my mouth waters. Im partial to the 84 / 84 QV. Over all, when you go over the checklist , the 328 is the better car on paper. Im very happy with mine, but I would have been just as happy if I had bought a 308 instead. I would not have had any issue with having to get the carbs synced at whatever intervals necessary. I was able to dial out some of the lack of rigidity in my GTS with larger wheels and fatter tires, but it will never handle as good as a GTB. At this point in time, I rarely drive my GTS with the roof out. I had a lot of fun while driving it with the roof out, but today I would rather have the GTB. They look the best, whether it be a 308 or a 328. My 89 is set up nice and it handles really well, I can only imagine how it would be if it were a GTB. At least I have a second top which is painted the same color as the car, so it looks a little more like a Berlinetta. G
I fully agree with you! Imo the carbed 208 GTB I have and the 308 GTB are amongst the most beautiful and most perfect Ferrari ever, yet as I drove the 328 GTS I got infected by the dynamic experience - and the cold wind in the hair! Last year as I was tempted to swap my 208 with a 308 dry sump I wasn’t as addicted. This time instead with the 328 I had no choice . I can’t see the time to bring it home! It is true that many details are inferior to the the carbed sisters - lack of Weber noise, not as nice mirrors, cloth instead of leather on the ceiling and behind the seats, hood grill instead of side grills, orange dials on black instead of satin alu bezel, plastic switches instead of metallic, and the most painful of all: the front end - but the driving experience and the elasticity of the 3.2 L 328 engine is just fantastic and it makes you (me, at least) forgive all the rest. And imo it has just the right power to have lots of fun, also on the mountains, without the risk to kill somebody. Or yourself. Ciao ciao, Nic
I can't remember if I posted in this thread but here is my experience. I had a 77 308 GTB for a long time period. When I bought my 308 I didn't like the 328. I bought my 328 last year because I developed a different taste and now I like them. I wouldn't go back to my 308. For many reason pointed out in other post here. I knew that mechanically I would like it because I owned a 3.2 Mondial for a few years and loved it. The 328 looks old but not too old you can see some modernity just looking at it while the 308 now look like a old car. I love the 328 console and WAY prefer the 328 door trim. My GF say the 308 seats were more comfortable and she may be right. But the one I miss the most is my Testarossa
