We used to study this when I was in the home building biz. When people are feeling good, they go for bright colors. If not, dull and drab. BTW, the number color for new Porsches is black.
I remember shaking my head at all the teal blue teal green cars in the 90's It was neat for a min but then outa control!
For sure! Grays, silvers and whites are SOOOOOOOOO boring and bland and ugly. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I recall every new BMW was "Boston Green" metallic. I was part of the problem and bought a '92 Corrado SLC in green pearl metallic. Or you can pay Porsche $14K and go paint to sample...they have many or maybe all those bright 1970s colors available. Part of the problem is that some trendy colors, like "chalk", are probably lumped in with grey. The nice aspect is that when you do venture beyond the loaner car colors -- white, black, silver -- your vehicle stands out. My wife drives a Macan in papaya, which is a great color and quite distinctive. IMHO car design is the bigger problem. If you have a black 328 (mine was metallic) or 930, no one will call it boring because it's an icon. If you have a Lexus/Infiniti (insert model name here) then color is all you have.
I ordered my C8 Corvette in silver for one reason: I was trying to make it less visible in public because its my daily. Its less flashy. It blends in better to become less invisible. Also it looks better longer when dirty. I can go longer between washings. Black cars always look dirty to me, even after washing.
For daily drivers I usually go with silver/grey/white because it’s more forgiving between washes for a car I ultimately don’t care about. For weekend toys, the skittles colors are nice. It’s nice to see yellow holding steady.
Alfa has this exclusive paint for the Tonale. I've seen it in person. Its beautiful... but I wouldn't want to pay an extra $2K for a green car. Interesting that they tried to buck the trends. Almost no green cars today. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My 911 is slate grey. I’m the second owner but probably would have ordered it this way. It is a lot more forgiving than black, looks great IMHO, and I’ve never wanted a look-at-me color. My black metallic 328 was perfect - never wanted red. I tend to appreciate the design of my fun cars, and bright colors don’t help. Also, cars have gotten huge, and bright colors exacerbate the mass. I saw a 911/991 Targa in shark blue yesterday, and to my eyes it made the car look kind of bloated. Black would have helped. Go back to the ‘80s and a 308 was a sliver of a car and looks fantastic in yellow. Actually there are almost no bad colors on a 308… Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
The world of art and art related disciplines have 180 degree (well 178.7) different view on color. The lighter the color, the more the design elements stand out…..black obscures the design elements. Look at cars coming in he opposite direction. It will take you much more time to ID a black car. This is why standard police cars are lighter colors (they want to be seen by the public) while protective services use black cars.
I’d make the distinction between “light” and “bright”. Silver highlights design elements, but bright red or yellow tend to call attention to the color itself. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
I have a yellow metallic pearl Diablo and a bright red Ford GT, and both greatly enhance all their design elements, of which are everywhere as they are both among the best designs of all time….so I’m not sure bright comes into this, other than bugs love to land on the yellow car.
I’m about over color. If it’s the hardware I want, I’ll buy it regardless. I don’t have enough years left to mess around.
