Winter Storage Questions

    Hello!

    I live in East Canada, I have a 2005 F430 which I keep in a heated garage, my car battery is charged during storage with a C-Tek.
    Usually you can't drive before May but with all these climate changes, well it was 13C last week end of Feb...o_O:(.
    I am considering small drives on the private roads near my house, but wonder if this is enough to heat the oil and engine, off course I can't drive really fast on these and won't go on highway with summer tires :)
    any advices ?

    Also should I keep the car in Neutral and avoid the handbrake while winter storage ? I have seen multiple opinions...:)

    I turn the battery off for long periods. I never start unless im going to drive it. Keep it simple. You dont need the brake if its on level ground, just shut it off in gear

    If you can't get up to speed ..just let it sit .. overinflate tires ..and if you want take fuse or relay off for fuel pumps before turning key in a few months ..crank for 10 seconds or so ..2 / 3 times

    Allright - leaving in Gear not sure with F1 will check - no risk for the clutch to leave it in 1st ?

    I have a 2009 F430 with a F1 shifter. It gets down to 32* F at night where I live. I don’t have a heated garage. I keep it on a battery tender and start the engine 2-3 times a month and run it for 15-20 minutes to get everything up to temperature.
    While it’s running I turn on the A/C, then the heater, turn on the lights, the radio, move the electric seat, etc.

    I haven’t driven it for several months at a time during the rainy seasons because my dirt road gets screwed up and the neighbor has to fix it with his tractor.

    Ive done this for the last 3 years and the car is fine. The car is stored on the top of a 4 post lift with a cover on it.

    I forgot to say that I shift through 1st to N to R and back to first a few times while it’s running. I put it in 1st, then turn off the key.

    No problems whatsoever.

    No ..the only risk is if the car dies or something happens to F1 system ..you will be stuck in 1 st

    The clutch is always engaged when off regardless of gear just like a true manual

    I also have problems with my dirt road, gets super messy and unfortunately reduces the driving season :D
    I have read that it is not really recommended to start the engine without driving it as the oil is not getting to operating temperature, you have a recent model, not sure it would be good for my 2005... ?

    That's a good idea to get oil round the engine before starting, which fuse do you pull?

    I let mine run until the engine temp is 160ish and the oil temp is 140ish. Thats close enough to operating temp. that it will burn off any moisture in the cylinders and oil.

    I do the same thing with my Harley and my track car during the winter and I’ve never had any problems. My boat has a big block 525 and doesn’t get started for 7 months at a time during the winter and it’s fine also.

    The 2005 and 2009 are almost identical so I wouldn’t worry about that part.

    What is bad for engines is just starting them for a couple of minutes and turning them off. They breathe in the cold, damp air and it stays in the cylinders and oil. I used to be an A & P mechanic at an airport. My boss always told me to not start the engines or start them and always bring them up to temperature. I’ve always done that and it’s worked well for me.

    I assume you mean for the Ferrari, you can start it and let it warm up till the fans come on and then turn it off? Obviously the best is to drive it, but sometimes that isn't practical due to weather.

    Fuses ..pdf25 and pdf25
    Or relays ..psr8 psr9 pdr8 psr9 .. 2 relays for each pump ..low speed and high speed

    Yes I’m referring to my 430. I will also block off the one front radiator intake in the front bumper so that the other side comes on also. (I can’t remember which one comes on first). I leave the car cover draped in front of the one intake to block it off. If I don’t do that, the second radiator fan won’t come on in the winter here.

    Honestly ..why bother starting ... the oil in the gearbox will never get to temp to burn off water ..I think you are not doing anything by starting it while in garage .. my 2 cents
