    Bribes at both ports?

I believe there is a rabbit hole of a story to go with this car

You are correct. I can assure you that there is plenty missing from the story as reported but there is also some patently false information in every article I've read about it thus far. Whether that is just news agencies making assumptions and filling in gaps to put a bow on their story, or whether they were given incorrect information from the start, isn't clear.

It is believed that the car was not the property of Gerhard Berger, but was/is owned by the factory. Maybe that was the reason the British officials forced the the sequestration

the funny thing is that both berger and alesi had their cars stolen prior to this from the aldrovandi hotel 'secure' car park in rome.

In the 1980s and 1990s many Ferraris stolen in Italy and France (Cote d'Azur) went via Marbella/Spain and then on to Dubai and further to Japan. Clearly organized crime and there were many groups of thieves involved. I have hundreds of court dox about these cases.

I remember reading a story in the French magazine Ferrari Club about fake valet at the Monaco Grand Prix in the 1970s stealing a 308 GTS

See post 14 and back then many stolen cars were just driven from Italy thru France to Marbella, Spain, where some specially motivated government people "did their job".

yes, the police staked it out to catch the perp, but after 4 days they gave up and brought the car back.
then i had a 4 month 3 way argument with my insurance company, the garage insurance company, and the security service insurance company...and eventually i called a halt to it and had the car sent to the geneva dealer and ended up being the first car their classiche dept redid - btw it was so early in the history of that dept that i did not even get a red book ....
