What if Newey is ready to retire? It's a long season now. I'm sure he has enough money.

I agree. I doubt he can be enticed into any kind of commitment that would match Ferrari’s long term goals. Brawn didn’t bite and I don’t think Newey will either.

Maybe the F1 designers and engineers deserve their own thread, rather than burying them in a tired overblown "scandal" thread. It would give us a chance to focus on F1. Heck, I'll start one.

"Ferrari is reportedly offering...." ---- reportedly by whom? This is smoke (so far). Scuderia's pursuit, offer and agreement with Sir Lewis were well-kept secrets until announcement time. Elkann's (and every other major team's) pursuit of Newey can be speculated ad nauseum. My school bus manufacturer would like to hire Adrian so that students get to school faster and ontime. :p Updating this baseless work with Lewis and Jerome info clouds the fact that this could have been written a year or two ago. Nothing new here.....

This complete "scandal" thread is a shame. FChat mods are doing nothing about this public lynching. Incredbile.

I highly doubt that the MP4/4 would have looked like it did had Nichols been alone in creating the car. the drawings I have seen for the initial car before Murray arrived at McLaren looked much like the 87 car. Murray brought with him the initial plans and drawings from Brabham and dictated the overall design concept. nobody can design the entire car today on their own, but there is usually one guy to take the blame when it all goes wrong - so why can't they take the praise when it goes right?

In a long interview published on Youtube, I saw that Steve Nichols didn't claim full paternity for the MP4/4, but righfully included the other designers at McLaren. He gave the names of his collaborators and gave them credit.
He mentioned Gordon Murray, who he said, was technical director recently recruited by Ron Dennis and given other tasks than designing the next season F1. McLaren was in reorganisation said Nichols. Apparently Murray gave some indications of what his work had been in the last Brabham he designed with the lay-down engine, as a path to pursue, and no more. Nichols said they were alreading thinking about lowering the centre of gravity as their priority for the next car. Nichols and his team, in collaboration with Weismann came up with the solution of a third shaft between the crankshaft and the gearbox input. Murray was no part of this. He wasn't coordinating the project, nor even attending the briefings apparently.
Nichols and his colleagues were astonished when Gordon Murray later added the MP4/4 to his portfolio , and even wrote a book where he claimed having designed the car, without mentioning of other designers.

That contradicts Nichols saying that Gordon wanted his typical arrow shaped cars that he alone thought was the superior philosophy. I don't think he came to McLaren with any specific drawings.

I watched the Motorsport interview on Youtube. I get where Nichols is coming from, but he is one of one. Here were others there -Bob Bell in particular that recount the opposite. Nichols was unhappy after Barnard left and that he was not promoted into the CTO position. he sniped at Murray the whole time - and eventually left for Ferrari - Just when Barnard was leaving for Benetton.

I was only talking about who had the most influence on the MP4/4 design. I think Steve Nichols did.
The fact is when a designer joins a team, there is often a project quite advanced on the drawing board.
So a newcomer will have more influence on the next project than on the existing one.

I hear you. I just believe Murray over Nichols. Regardless, Newey most likely a better designer than Murray. Murray had a way more open rule book to work from. I respect them both.

Newey would only go to Ferrari - I think - if they give him the full keys to the kingdom... to run the team and design the cars he wants. Most likely from England as well. Would Ferrari do it? I dont know. Its no secret that Newey wanted more say at Williams - that is why he left, and he is a key decision maker at Redbull - not sure how he would have more say and control at Ferrari. BUT if they say - you run the whole thing your way and only report to Elkann... it could be a pretty enticing move. All that is still no certainty of success.

Ferrari is already offering a blank check book and whatever he wants. Not to mention a chance to work with Lewis now, and with every move Ferrari has made, going after more and more redbull and Mercedes engineers, Ferrari is THE team to go to, anywhere else wouldn't make sense.

+1 agree. Given the current regulations the designer's job is incredibly challenging.

    Welcome to FChat F1.

You realize Newey has turned down Ferrari 3x with LUDICROUS offers from Ferrari. Actually, it's 2x that Newey turned down Ferrari because the "psuedo 3rd time" was for IndyCar which never panned out.

    Food for thought....

Apart some reluctance to relocate near Ferrari, I don't think Newey feel the need to tick that box.
Also, it's probable that Ferrari history in the last 15 years don't inspire confidence.

Ferrari had Aldo Costa for much of that time.

Costa is basically tied with Newey for the most successful designer in F1 history, yet somehow he never gets (or takes?) credit

Agreed. Newey has less of a headache with RedBull and his personal family's location in the U.K.

Newey to Ferrari is a pipe dream. It would only be possible if he wanted to achieve something with The Scuderia and Elton.
