In June of 2020, when the world was on the precipice of ending, I decided to pull the trigger on a very gently used 720s in an epic spec (test drove a F8 and Performante back to back as well before pulling the trigger). Being 28 years old at the time, It was my first supercar and boy, what a car to enter the supercar world with. Everything else just felt and continues to feel slow in comparison.

I was fortunate enough to also track my car around CTMP (Canadian Tire Motosport Park) in the summer of 2021 alongside other McLarens, and the car exceeded every expectation I had.

I sold my beloved at the end of the summer season (Ontario, Canada weather only allows 4 good months of driving) and have been punting around in my 2006 Toyota Camry that I've kept for the last 10 years (by choice and not necessity, I'm weird like that). I told myself that I would eventually get something else next year or the year after (2023) but decided that pricing in the second-hand market was still ridiculous.

I now find myself not able to hold off any longer and am considering getting back into the supercar world.

Currently I am considering a couple options within the $475,000 CAD range (roughly $350,000 USD/Freedom Bucks) plus or minus $15k, which gives me a couple options.

F8: There are some solid specced ones around my price range (some are even going for $500k+). This is probably the closest performance wise to the 720s. I may do a track day if health permits, but primary duty will be as a weekend car.

    Listings:

    2022 F8 - Rosso Corsa

    2021 F8 - Rosso Corsa

    2020 F8 - Grigio Scuro

Huracan STO: There are few with a decent spec (some are going for $550k+). This is likely the most visceral and fun option but my concern is ride quality. Same as above, it will be used a weekend car and maybe a track day if I can swing it.

    Listings:

    2021 STO - White

2022 STO - Special Matte Green

    2022 STO - Black

As mentioned above, I had done a very brief test dive of an F8 and a Huracan Performante (I'm told the STO is a RWD and more focused version of the Performante), so I guess you could say I'm kind of familiar as to the differences in ethos and driving style of the two.

As I will be taking a sizeable hit on taxes (13% of purchase price), I have to also consider depreciation and potential resale values of the vehicles after a couple seasons as having these cars sit for the majority of the year is painful.

I would really appreciate your insights and thoughts as I know there are many more financially capable members here who have ample ownership experience with a vast array of manufacturers and models.

    Cheers,

    Riz

At a guess there's lots of answers already in the F8 vs STO thread you looked at this morning

How was your 720s ownership experience? Pretty reliable? Thanks

Sounds like you got a real nice problem to have. I have never driven an STO but hear the ride quality is harsh. So if its a weekend car thing and not a track thing I would think F8 would be the better choice. I have never driven either but I do own an EVO which is a ton of fun.

Maybe start with a little seat time in each car. They are racially different solutions to radically different problems (I say that as a current Pista owner, and former Performante and STO owner).

The following is my opinion on the F8 specs:

    1. 2022 F8 - has a lot of nice options. Many buyers did not like the surround view (SURR). I have an F8 and my preference is for the race seats as opposed to the comfort seats. For a mid-engine car, I think that race seats are a better match. Comfort seats are great for an 812, etc. There are two leather options not listed - leather headliner and leather rear shelf. These two options round out a full/complete leather interior. The only "advantage" of this car over the 2021 or the 2020 is the remaining warranty.

    2. 2021 F8 - same comment as above in terms of the surround view and the seats.

    3. 2020 F8 - great spec - long list of options. Great seats. Bold interior. I did not see two leather options - leather headliner and leather rear shelf.

My order preference would be the 2020, 2022, and last the 2021. I prefer to see Ferraris with some "boldness" on the interior or exterior. The only one that meets this important criteria is the 2020. The 2022 and the 2021 are your typical resale red Ferraris without much thought in terms of spec.

I have had my F8 for almost three years and love it. No issues and a blast to drive.

I can't comment on the STO possibilities - never owned or driven a STO.

I scoured that thread a lot of the convo was derailed and off topic.

Thank you. The ride quality is pretty much the biggest gripe at the moment.

It should be a bit easier as our winter season is finally coming to a close. Apart from that, most dealers here are reluctant on test drives and like to play hard to get.

Razz, I don’t think any of us have the definitive answer for you. You mentioned track use a few times. The STO you mentioned is designed with that in mind and it is a more raw race type of feel. The F8 is more civil in ride quality. Some people want exotic looks but more luxury sporty rid…F8…other want more of a raw feel, more performance race car like….Lambo STO and Porsche GT3RS. That’s all have for ya!

Coming from a Mac any naturally aspirated car is going to feel slow to you. So I'd lean toward the F8 on that alone. The STO has the aero and the weight but it's going to be down on power big time.

Other option may include getting another 720, the new 750, or a 488 GTB.

    Good luck!

Aside from the STO, have you given any thought to the Tecnica? Ride quality isn’t as harsh, has more luggage space, and the performance specs are nearly identical.

Definitely considered. They are about $50k cheaper than an STO. Issue is that it seems tame compared to an STO and I feel like I’m “settling” for an inferior variant, if that makes sense.

You are making that perception off of the price (which in this case both lose to the Aventador). To me, the Tecnica makes more sense, and the reviewers seem to favor the Tecnica over the STO. It also has a higher top speed if you want to make that comparison.

If you are not tracking then Technica is going to be much more performance than you'll ever use. These cars are a TON of fun to drive

I’m making that perception more from a pecking order of the variants. The STO is a more raw and focused Technica in the Huracan line.

I have the STO and an F8 spider. If you’re looking for something very similar to the 720, the Ferrari is the car for you. STO more raw, but it’s not for everyone.

Ironically I find the seats more comfortable in the STO, the car is a more analog and linear driving feel.

The F8 is an all around great car, more GT like.

Sorry, missed your response. My 720s was great and I had no issues with it, contrary to what the reputation McLaren’s have
