His time was P10 technically...but it still doesn't matter, Tsunoda continues to have a notable gap to him in quali.
Apparently given 2 race ultimatum. Kinda ****ty then that they're replacing him in FP1. But unfortunately it seems Ricciardo is one of those drivers that is seriously quick in a car that suits his driving style but just can't adopt to a car that he's not comfortable with.
Ric is a driver who was never going to live up to his mouth. He believed all the hype... most of which he sourced himself. He had an okay run at RB but ran away when it was clear he was no match for Verstappen. Championship material wants to be in that role fighting and improving... not running away from it. He's was dismal at Renault... f-ed them over and again ran to "greener" pasture's and was embarrassed by Lando. Now, he's being embarrassed by Yuki... a petulant child of a driver. It seems he spends to much time in the hype dream... loves goofing off... loves the camera... loves the attention... all the while looking for excused for his mediocrity.
I was a fan of Ricciardo when he came to F1; he was very good then. I remember that during the 1st hybrid season, he won 3 GPs and totally eclipsed Vettel. The only one to win against Mercedes then. At the time, some on this forum even touted him for a seat at ... Ferrari ! Ricciardo was unsettled by Verstappen arrival at RB, deciding to leave after a couple of years. The rest is history. He never felt comfortable at Renault, or McLaren and now he is disappointing at VCard/RB. What a come down ... I follow Piastri now.
My God...how long did he milk his record vs Seb. Let's not forget how dismal Seb's car was that year. I forget how many DNF's he had. I mean Ric was still talking about it at Renault. He sort of reminds me of middle aged guys who never quite eclipsed the value and success they had in high school. They always talk about that one touchdown. The sooner he's gone the better. I was a huge fan the first year or two until it became clear he was an attention whore who was more interested in celebrity than the craft.
He’s like an American football coach. No matter how bad he ****s up there’s always a sucker ready to offer him a job. Did he ever bring any significant sponsorship to any team?
I think the only thing he was able to bring any team was his popularity. He's a goof... and I guess that's great entertainment for the non-serious racing fans. I definitely feel when drive to survive got going that was played up and I think teams just thought of him as a potential draw maybe and he certainly seemed to grab onto that with both hands and milk it I mean how many drivers are actually "out there" in the public. Not many at all. Lewis is the only driver that anyone knows outside of the racing bubble. Lewis is the Khardasian of the racing world and that brought celebrity to Mercedes in addition to his undeniable race craft. Ricciardo brings a questionable craft and a performance that are in conflict with one another. You can't be "that guy" and also be an "also-ran." You can't be that goofy smiling guy while being asked why your teammates consistently outperform you every race.
One good practice in this life is not kicking someone when he´s already on the ground: let´s not despise all his career because of his later years, I think at some point he was good. He put a good fight against Vettel and the young Verstappen, he outscored his teammates at Renault by a big margin. But from then on, nothing more, who knows why. They´re humans after all, not machines, they can just loose the edge.

Yes, that was the time when swerving under breaking was still tolerated, and some drivers made great use of it when defending their position. The rules were later changed by the FIA, precisely to avoid such incidents.
--The New Zealand Herald reported that Ricciardo had been ‘given an ultimatum’ by Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, a claim that Marko himself has now rubbished.--
https://www.planetf1.com/news/laughing-daniel-ricciardo-criticism-f1-future It’s his demeanor that I find grating. He’s laughing and playing the fool while a more deserving driver is sitting on the sidelines. Sort of grotesque, no?
Generally speaking he has a great demeanor and sense of humor. It’s good that he’s not so fragile that it has changed under the current pressure however perhaps it has made some people mistakenly think he isn’t taking things seriously. He obviously didn’t come back to fail and perhaps he is realizing that this current formula of cars simply doesn’t fit his driving style.
he has had plenty of opportunities to show his talents while making plenty of money. now its just a saving face endeavor.
He wasn't "touted for a seat at Ferrari": according to Mark Hughes of "Motorsport Magazine" he actually signed an "open option" with Ferrari, but the decision to confirm it or not until a certain date was theirs, and they let the date pass without closing the option. The deal was that him, and Ferrari, agreed on not discussing any other agreement with anybody before the limit. If my memory serves me well, that date was June 30th, 2018. At that time, Ferrari was thinking about Raikkonen's replacement. Rgds
I think we can all agree that Ric is world class. World class at harvesting cash from the clowns who’ve offered him ludicrously favourable contracts over the past few years. He’s been terrible value for money for every team he’s raced for since leaving RB. Funny guy though, and at the end of the day, he’s having the last laugh as he wonders off into the sunset to spend his millions.
Always better with a reference or a source: April 25th, 2018 : https://www.grandprix247.com/2018/04/25/red-bull-warn-ricciardo-amid-talk-of-ferrari-deal-on-the-table/ […] Word in the paddock is that the Aussie has started talks with Ferrari for a possible place alongside Sebastian Vettel in the Italian team, replacing 38-year-old veteran Kimi Raikkonen who would then retire from F1 at the end of this season. Furthermore, Ferrari are said to have penned a deal with Ricciardo barring him from negotiating with any other team, including Red Bull, until 1 July. According to « Gazzetta dello Sport », Ricciardo is seeking a two-year deal and wants €27-million per year from the team he drives for beyond this season. « Motorsport Magazine » report: “There are many different types of contractual options, but this one is said to be on both sides up to a defined date (believed to be June 30). Up until that time, neither party can officially negotiate with another. Because the driver is effectively locking himself out of the market for that time, discussions for his post-2018 services are contractually ‘owned’ by the team (in this case Ferrari). As such, he will be paid a fee. Between now and then he and Ferrari can negotiate about a future contract. This is all conventional F1 practice,” concluded the report. […] Rgds
