"Lift and coast" regenerates the battery for the acceleration at the exit of the next corner. If a driver doesn't plan it, he is left with just the ICE power. It's still racing, but a different sort of racing. It's just like drivers having turbo lag years ago, they had to anticipate.
Or keep the turbo primed. There is a video of Gilles driving a TC street car on a track. Going through a turn he is continually blipping the throttle to keep rpm’s up so when exiting there is no lag to “anticipate”.
I wouldn't take Gilles Villeneuve as an example of turbo lag management; the guy had no mechanical sympathy !
