Here's a question: On the F1 cars the little window in the Tachometer shows you what gear you're in, does the manual car have the same feature or is the window just dark?

I can't speak to the original factory manuals, but my gear window post conversion is dark.

Interesting question, I hadn't looked into it before.
From what i can find, the gear info window remains blank, evident by the lack of any visible number during the gear change of #162945 in the 3:46-3:50 mark of the video below.

Exactly- it’s there but never illuminates. Weirdly I’d say you completely stop even noticing it’s there. At one point I believe trev had a 430 working that had the display working in a manual conversion as a gear indicator, as even in manual cars the engine knows which gear it’s in all the time from the speed/revs.

It just seems strange that the factory didn't install a tach card without the window.

When you consider how customised the centre console was on the 599 for the tiny number of cars they made that used it, it does seem odd. I guess the difference is that the console is an in-house made part, whereas the gauge cluster was bought in from digitek.

So my next question is, what about the manual 430s from the factory? Do they have a blank window also?

The way it has been described to me, the most important part of the conversion is to use rods like the factory and not cables. The cables stretch and cause all sorts of problems. EAG used cables.

The factory used cables instead of rods for the 360 and 430 as well.

Lot shorter distance for the V8s compared to the V12s.

Lots of manufacturers use cables for the shift linkage, Porsche, Lotus, etc.

In nearly all cases that’s because it’s not possible to use a direct linkage.
