Gilles wa snot a superb qualifyer???That's a new one...perhaps the fact that his car was 1 or 2 sec slower than the best can clarify it, after all he was fast, sometimes more thant that, but not always....should i remind you what wa sprrobably the most amazing qualifying lap in f.1 history, Monaco 1982....his car was about 2,5 sec off the pace and he was only beaten by a brabham that was below the weight limit! Go see where his team mate, a top driver at Mónaco was, how how far behind he finished! In 78, Gilles Ferrari was not the fastest thing around, Gilles was not himself a sgast as carlos at the start, but gradualy caught up and he wa sfaster by the end of theyear. /9 , the williams, ligier and Renault were often a lot faster in qualy, so it was very difficult to take pole, i remenbe rthat at Monaco where Ferrari managed to lock the front row, Gilles and Josy were trading fastest laps, untill Jody decided, it was no use, Gilles was always able to go faster, so he gave up, but when the time came to qualify, Gille scar had a problem i believe a fuel pick up or something and Jody was able to stuck it on pole.
In 80 the car was hopeless, but Gilles still managed to qualy near the front in some races...Jody was so far back...81, another dude of a car, probably the worst chassis on the grid, 82, Renault where faster, and René a superb qualifyer, so despite only having two poles, that says nothing about his sheer speed.

He could, but i also feel that's a bit unfair to Jody. Jody was a bloody good driver, very, very fast, and inteligent, it's true that Gilles was very unlucky (like in Zandvoort, or Monaco), but Jody took better care of the car, Zolder for example, Gilles could have taken 4th or 3thd, but he wouldn't settle for that, and just ran like mad till run out of fuel...but of course, this is why we love him, he wouldn't be Gilles if he hadn't done that, this is what his detractors can't understand, there are more important things than the title, Damon Hill won the title but no one thought he was the best driver, Gilles didn't, Moss didn't, but all the other drivers knew they where the best, and they had no problems to admit it, and i believe that kind of respect was more important to them then a cup, i know it would be to me.

I dug into it. When you look at Gilles against Carlos in 78 and against Jody in 79, his qualifying isn't all that impressive. His statistical best season in 79 he was about even steven against Jody in quali. However in 1980 he destroyed Jody 13-1 with an average delta of over 0.65 seconds. In 81 he beat Pironi 10-5 with the same delta. Was this because he was promoted to #1 driver and had the better equipment, or was it just his self improvement? Who knows. IMO still far from the greatest in qualifying, but was better than I initially gave him credit for.

Go and check the diferente to Didier in 82...you'll geta shock, and Pironi was regarded by many as the second fastest driver after Gilles. Also you should know that in 78, Ferrari was changing to Michelin tyres, and on many races Gilles was using a diferent counpound than Carlos, being a ginea pig, so you can't really compare them both. Gilles arrived from f.Atlantic, where cars had abou 170 hp to and f.1 with 500hp, so not so easy.
When first tested in Fiorano, he was 1sec slower than Carlos, when Jody first tested at Fiorano one year later, he was 1 sec slower than Gilles! And don't forget the 11 sec Gilles put on Sheckter ar Watkins Glen in ghe wet practice.

Sure is convenient that some say Pironi is the second fastest behind Gilles. What a way to boost the myth no? A quick look at 1980 shows Pironi going back and forth in quali against Jaques Laffite. Was he considered the 3rd fastest guy?

Being good in the jr ranks doesn't mean anything when judging one's F1 career. You are kind of making excuses for Gilles which shouldn't be needed for supposedly the best driver of all time.

With my recent research on Gilles it confirms my thoughts and others that he had greatness in him. But I stand by my believe he is overrated and nowhere near the top of the list of all time greats.

It is interesting how much quicker he got in F1. I find it hard to believe an elite driver goes from average to incredible. I think the equipment he was given played a big role. I suspect Carlos and Jody got the better equipment in his early years, and I think Gilles got the best stuff in 80-82. Back in those days there could be significant differences between equipment and preference between teammates.

Well he never fails to disappoint. I can't believe that the stewards didn't even take a hard look at Lance and Lewis in Turn 1?

A father always has the secret wish to speak highly of his children.
Ever hard Stroll Sr. praise Lanc-Aston? Maybe at home, and even then...
Aston Martin is Lance's home, so what is the surprise to anyone about his presence / performance?

I still think he has no place in F1, as most (some?) opine.o_O
Bottom line, if he were out of a seat, who would hire him? Minor formulae, maybe.

Re. Gilles, he was the most loved F1 Ferrari driver ever. To Mr. Ferrari, he was a son.

    Regards, Alberto

Next, Newey goes to AM and Stroll wins a WDC.

my comment today that Lewee is the new Stroll was echoed by this amusing zip on planet by "Bill":

Lance F-ing Hamilton: "Obviously not my fault - I just went for the gap. How was I to know that those other drivers would turn right at the first turn? Mom! They're making me look bad. Tell them to let me win! Mom!"

Lewis was to blame for the T1 crash that effectively ended 3 cars' races.

Stroll had some blame. Yes he couldn't see Lewis coming because he had Alonso on his inside, but he should've at the very least expected that there is the possibility of another car being on Alonso's inside. Had Alonso not been there Lewis and Stroll still would've collided I think.

Norris the innocent party got the biggest penalty of all of them, 25K fine for walking across the closed track. Genius, FIA. Simply genius.

Undeserved penalty imo. It was a nice move by Stroll and he got pushed off the track in the middle of it. Pushing a guy off the track while he's passing you should not be considered in the right.

Yes but did he apologize lol :)

    From The Race.com:

    LOSER: LANCE STROLL
    Image Unavailable, Please Login

Magnussen's second indiscretion in two days spared some of Stroll's blushes as a 10-second penalty for passing Albon off-track dropped him to 17th in the classification.

Stroll gets a bit of leniency for being among the midfielders considering the safety car allowed some of those he'd been ahead of in the first stint a cheap pitstop. And it's not like the Aston Martin was mustard in Miami either.

But even with that in mind it looked fast enough that he should have been slicing through those cars with far more ease.

That's now two points finishes from six races (eight including the sprints) - team-mate Fernando Alonso has a 100% record, extended in Miami by a safety car-assisted climb up the order from 15th on the grid. Stroll's even been overtaken by Tsunoda in the drivers' championship.

The picture that paints just isn't good enough. - JC

Apart from the first half (and not alwayas) in 78, Gilles as always faster than his team mates...in fact, when he drve a Mclaren for his first race at silverstone, he beat Mass in an m26, while he was driving an m23...

A sensational debut. To be fair the M23 was a better car than the M26 and Mass was never WDC material but still!
