But getting back to the tools. As Gene points out, I also don't think this could really be any kind of a business. I think this is more of a Ferrari DIY club sort of thing. If someone rolled this into their business the overhead costs would kill it. As my level of frustration has pushed me into mania, I'd be willing to host the thing. If we get 15 or so people on-board, I think this could really work quite nicely.
Why don't we start with a list of the tools we want to acquire, with prices, so we can figure out how much the total cost to accumulate the tools is. Baum has a number of the Ferrari-specific tools we would need in this document, including the head-torque socket. But there are no prices: http://www.baumtools.com/ferrari_catalog_2006.pdf Birdman
The other suggestion I'm thinking of for the consortium is that whoever has a certain tool last hangs onto it until the next person needs it. That might seem counter-intuitive and you might think that one person should be the official holder of the tools. That may be best, but consider that the guy holding the tools in a central location will constantly be having to send them out to people and get them back. It could be a lot of work for that person, and extra unneccesary shipping for everyone. So the idea is you have the head honcho merely responsible for knowing where the tools are at any moment. So if I need a ring nut tool, I call up the tool consortium head honcho guy and say I need it. He says "Oh, Joe Smith has it. I'll tell him to send it to you." He sends an e-mail to Joe Smith that "Birdman needs a certain tool, please send it to him and here's his address." He cc's me on the e-mail so I'm expecting it. When I get the tool, I inform the head guy that I now have it and he updates his records. When the next person needs it, I send it to him. Now we don't waste money shipping things back and forth from a central location, but instead just pass the tools around from person to person as needed. I expect that the tools may often sit at one person's house for a while until it's needed again, but who cares? Anyone who loses/destroys a tool has to replace it for the consortium. Thoughts? Nice work on the suggestions Birdman. Some questions. If a member wants to ship the tool back to the "head tool person" (HTP) just so they don't lose it, can they? If there are a few central HTP's, this may work. I know I (Ok, my wife) could ship something for me at any time. As long as I numbered the tools so I could tell her to ship tool number 19 instead of trying to describe it. Ok, back on topic. As far as the list of special tools goes, I'm not going to be a lot of help. One thought I do have is that the tools will probably be more towards the older cars. I'm thinking 348 and earlier? I don't want to exclude anyone, but I also want to make sure that they tools we buy are for the bulk of the tool consortium. So, let's start the list: - Cam Locks (How many different engines?) - Cam wrenches (I know my 328 needs these) - Seal press (do we include specialty general tools? i.e. dial indicators, compression tester etc?) This forum rocks. Gene
What's the status of the tool loaner program? Could we have a sticky thread with the list of who has what and deal directly between F-Chatter?
I'm in guys. I love mycar ,(77 308), and am going to do all of the work except alignment and upholstry. I think if we list the tool and tool owner, we have someone to go to. Otherwise, we are building a 3 d matrix, which is beyond me. We also need to build a list of special tools for each operation, ie. x ring nut tool for a clutch job, or y tool for a rear axle bearing replacement on a 308. I am a tool junkie, as a general contaractor, i do almost everything, excpept alignments, upholstry and wall paper. I have given up tools because i didn't use them enough to warrant their retention, oxy acetylin torch, craftsman buz box...... AS a side note, if we can compile threads on cam belt replacement, cooling system and brake system flushing, suspension bushing replacement, we can focus our tool list to the major maintenance items and have a great reference for those of us delighted to do our oun maintenance. I am thinking aout building a set of F/R brake pressure gauges and a set of manometers to set carbs. I belong to a local sports car club, just so i could borrow their chasis scales. I am definitely in it. best, chris
If a tool is loaned by someone and it is to be kept by the last person that used it and then he sends it to the next borrower then the original owner may never see it again. Also if one guy is to head up the process of keeping track of all of the tools what happens if a tool is broken or lost? Is he to be held responsible, the guy that had it last, or the new guy?? Seems to me the responsibility is spread over too many people. I think that one "Head Tool Guy" should just handle the info ie. he has the tool list and knows who has each particular tool. He then give the address to the borrower. The transaction is then conducted between the guy with the tool and the borrower. The borrower is responsible for shipping in and out and is responsible to replace broken or lost tools. Better yet one person makes up the list of tools, keeps it current and makes it a sticky post...it's now available to everyone. That way the HTG doesn't have to be involved in every loan. This post can note the rules of the loan (keep it simple) and the responsibilities of the borrower. Someone mentioned short timers so maybe you have to have some limit # of posts to participate. I'm afraid if tools are spread all over the country it would be too hard to keep track of them or the master list could get lost. My 2c.
Ok - so the basic framework is: 1. Get Sticky Thread for Tools Loan 2. Each tool owner posts what he/she has and loan requirements (deposit before shipping - ie check, or whatever they are are comfortable with, loan duration, availibility, shipping charges, etc..) 3. Tool borrower contacts tool owner by PM and agrees to requirements 4. Tool owner decides if they are comfortable dealing with that person (checks posts, maybe PM other members)receives deposit and shipping money 5. Tools is shipped 6. Tool is returned after use - if problem it is resolve off list between the two parties 7. Feedback post can be left to comment on transaction Is that a fair framework? How can we get a Sticky post going?
This sounds about as simple as will work. Lets get a sticky started to refine this - or develope it further. chris
Did this tool loan/rental program get going? I am in the middle of the transmission dis-assembly of my Dino 246 and I need the ring nut tools for the input and lay shafts. I need the 50mm x 260mm tool for the input shaft and the 56mm tool for the lay shaft. I know Superformance UK lists them but I would prefer to rent them stateside. TIA for any help.
Never been an official "program" per se that I know of but I've loaned my specialty tools out to forum members several times. If I don't know them well, I ask for a deposit for the amount of the replacement cost, ship it, and when they ship it back, I refund the deposit minus shipping cost. Might want to post in the 206/246 section just asking if anyone has the appropriate tool, I bet someone would be willing to help.
