What happened to Rob and Simon?

Forums like this depend on a relatively small number of people to provide lively input. Sometimes things are said in humour but taken badly. Sometimes people get banned and the logic is inconsistent with other behaviour that's accepted. Of course moderators are volunteer humans and have their foibles.

Fchat has a steadily accumulating set of problems. My opinion: Increasing intrusive advertising (US car adverts in international threads FFS); too much nanny software; too many lefty trolls (whose relentless proselytising makes discussion pointless) and the guard rails of humour vs offense are steadily narrowing (which probably reflects the real world). The first thing I'd suggest is stop banning people. Then lose the car adds.

It's amazing the forum model has lasted so long. How long before forum owners use AI bots to pump up the content and user stats? This is probably already happening...

Meanwhile, Rob is active on whatsapp, which is completely free of advertising, moderators and trolls.

 

I was going to say traditionally in this situation we could blame PP, but as we can’t do that any more it must be Moretti’s fault.

10 years ago, I employed a small team of people whose job was making social media posts promoting our company. They operated thousands of fake accounts across twitter, facebook, linkedin and tech industry forums, mainly with simple programmed scripts. We built up 500K followers on Twitter and won an award for our social media strategy. I still get complimented on it to this day. If I did it again, of course I'd use ChatGPT.

We later did an analysis of the 500K, 90% of which were bots - other companies doing the same BS as us. Bots exchanging views with bots. Think about this when you read the "reader" comments in newspaper web sites.

 

And BOTS are clever. They mirror other posts. NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) documents that process very well. Hence everyone sits in their separate echo chambers. It's a major social problem with many people not equipped with logical thinking powers to understand what's going on, and they vote.

 

Every politician employs, at taxpayer expense, a communications team, who use the whole gamut of fake accounts and content to influence voters. Sadly, the left are much better at this than conservatives, so we're slowly losing the fight.

I hosted a senior federal labor minister at a C-level leadership event some months ago, who brought along her advisor team, including her media person. This thing (I wouldn't presume to use a gender pronoun) had orange hair, green vest and orange trousers. They(!) looked like they'd walked off a uni campus 2 weeks ago. Needless to say they was well to the left of the minister's public position.

 

And that's domestic. The Russian and Chinese bot factories are yuge. Add the scammers and the virus generators, and the internet is wilder than the wild west.

It's out of control, such a waste when teachers and nurses etc get paid so poorly.

There’s an element of truth to the first part of that, but I reckon Ian is on the money that it’s a reflection of current society, unfortunately.

We used to be a nation of relaxed, non-offended people. You knew you were “accepted” when you started getting schitt thrown at you left right and centre, and the more crap you got the more you were liked.

Now everyone flees to their safe space as soon as anything that could be taken as remotely offensive comes their way.

Our ability to laugh at ourselves is pretty much gone. Sad.
