Hello sirs I bought my 612 6 months ago with 50.000 kms. The car had been practically stationary for 5 years, although the previous owner had serviced it with fluid changes and little else more. I changed oil and fixed electrical problems. The car was running well, but soon it started leaking oil from the timing and the steering hose. Also for an oil pressure detector. Now I'm going to change the timing belt and I wanted to ask for your advice please. The 612 is a car that I love, and I want to travel with it for many years to come. That's why I ask you please, what would you advise me to do to the car now that I'm going to do the belt? Should I change the water pump? I don't have a lot of mechanical knowledge and a reputable mechanic in Barcelona will do everything. Considering that the car is already 18 years old, what should I do to it to be able to travel with peace of mind? Is it normal for a car that has been stationary for a long time to start leaking liquids in so many places? Thank you very much
All the belts, all the fluids, all the filters, spark plugs, O2 sensors, tires if date codes are 2019 or earlier, and coolant water pipe (part number 181599). The coolant pipe will fail and leave you stranded and to replace when the other work is going on is very easy, Of course the brake pads/rotors should get a good look. Understanding where you are on clutch wear is also important for long term peace of mind. Bill
+1. LondonParis has been owning a 612 for years, therefore you can count on him to give you the right advices.
Take it to a Ferrari dealer and get them to do pre-emptive maintenance (coolant pipes as mentioned , brake pistons, oil gaskets and a thorough assessment of steering rack and suspension joints). Take the initial pain, and all will be good afterwards.
I want to take it to Scuderia Baldini in Rome. I have been told that they are very professional and very good mechanics. And as Dkurtaz said, it will hurt at first but you are right that it is the solution to enjoy my car safely
Finally I’ll take my car to Ferrari Toulouse in France. They have me a budget, not bad, making all works you told me. Regarding the water pump; my car has 55000 kms? When doing the belt should I change the pump or is it not necessary? What are your thoughts please? Thank you very much
Others may have better advice, I have 107000 km on mine and no issues to date with the water pump. The water pipe, as previously mentioned, is another story.
After 5 years of non-usage, and having scheduled an intervention for changing the timing belts, I would change the water pump by the same time. You would have new balls in the game.
Today I left the car in the Ferrari in Toulouse. I have been told that they will check the pump and tell me if it needs to be changed if it is not okay. If they tell me it's okay, do you still advise me to change it?
