I was half watching something about the Kentucky Derby the other day when one of the people referred to it as Amish NASCAR..

The Matra Le Mans car was at Phillip island a few years ago and it was spectacular.

RIP Parnelli Jones. A man who could win in anything: Champ cars, Nascar, Sprint cars, Trans Am, Baja. Turned down an F1 drive with Lotus in '64 as he didn't want to be number 2 to Jim Clarke! Had a crack at F1 as a constructor in the '70s with Mario at the wheel. He is the sort of driver I miss, those who would have a crack at anything.

Just watched the highlights

 

I watched the start and then bits in between and the last 3 hours.

It's back to being a very interesting race.

Interesting video explaining how a modern F1 gearbox works. I was surprised to learn they're in fact a traditional dog box, the only difference being hydraulically operated "barrels" to engage the shift forks, rather than fork rods pushed and pulled by a gear lever.

The advantage of the barrels is that you can operate shift forks for different gear pairs at the same time, so disconnecting 3rd happens while 4th is being connected, rather than a H pattern where you move out of 3rd then across the gate to engage the other fork rod and into 4th.

That's why the shifts are faster. Also of course a computer blips the throttle to just the right revs for downshifts, rather than the driver having to judge it. Downshifts are the most difficult part of using a manual dog box.
