so you also say in the US to an oil pan cover ( for example part no. 9111154 ) engine casing?
and also to a valve cover then engine casing?

They are not "casings", they are "castings". Also, electron and magnesium are different. Magnesium is a pure metal. Electron is an alloy of magnesium. It contains about 90% magnesium and various other metals. This alloy was used for lightweight castings as it is generally stronger and more easily machinable that pure magnesium.

In American English we distinguish between Engine Block and Engine Case or Crankcase. In air cooled engines where the engine is split in two, we use engine case or crankcase. Air cooled VW, Porsche, Lycoming, Continental, etc.

I am not arguing with your expertise on Ferrari engines, Dyke. This is just a discussion, but I disagree, as in the context of what I was stating with reference to a number of peripheral engine parts that form an engine they are "casings" for the engine internal parts. Casting is the process in which they are made. Pistons that are forged are not referred to as the engine forgings and crankshafts are not referred to as the engine machinings.

    • A cam cover is a casing for the camshaft, valve springs, top of the cam chain, etc.
    • The timing chain cover is a casing for the timing/cam chain, sprockets and tensioner and is often actually referred to as a timing chain case or casing.
    • An oil sump is a casing for the oil, any baffling and possibly an oil pump. The casing itself also cools the oil.

Well Steve, you are the first person I have ever heard refer to those parts in that way. However, if you are happy, that is all that matters.

Well, Dyke how about when you refer to those parts in that way yourself? Yes, I'm very happy thank you, especially when I see that you do refer to the timing chain cover as a case yourself.

    From the post here.

    And from your post here:

Looks like this thread also is now (d)evolving into another in which someone with seemingly no firsthand experience, knowledge or understanding of the subjects is desperately attempting to make themselves seen as an “expert” of.

    My man,

I gotta say, this thread is pure gold. Remember those 'permabear' prophets of doom like @Bradwilliams and @Super Dave? They were screaming, "Sell everything!" back in 2015.

    Just picture it...

It's no wonder they've vanished. I mean, if I had been handing out (or rather, battling to hand out) advice like that, I'd be hiding under a rock too. Just picture the poor fool who followed their advice—bet they're not exactly swapping friendship bracelets now!
