I have a chrome exhaust on my 296GTS and it gets stained and can't be cleaned. Get black. Don't even consider chrome as an option.
Its atrocious that Ferrari gives Chrome as the default option. Chrome exhaust gets stained / soiled so easily, and the worst part is that it is in the middle of the back, above tag display, compared to being placed at the bottom on either ends. I am making sure my GTS will have the black exhaust.
Actually even if it can be cleaned, you would have to do it fairly often. I'm wondering if I could get the thing painted black. Anyone try that or have ideas about how to do something like that?
I explored powder coating with heat resistant formula that can stand the temperature of exhaust. The cost to getting thew exhaust piece out of the back bumper assembly was ridiculous, and my GTS is anyway coming, so I decided not to do it. When you open the engine bay glass cover, you'll see lot of high voltage circuitry running all around. No shop, other than a Ferrari dealer, will touch it.
There have been other posts that have said they tried to paint it and it failed . The black can still get a residue but it is harder to see . I believe that wiping the exhaust reasonably often wil be needed . I have black on my GTS order
OK all you exhaust OCD types, it's time to try an experiment. Is it possible to use some sort of tape in the exhaust to bypass 'stain' cleanup? Armed with some random tapes, we're going to find out. Started with basic Scotch clear tape in the wide width. Also considered duct tape, and wide black masking tape. So far here's what I learned. I made a paper template thinking a pattern would help, but that wasn't necessary. Here are the results. Once I put some miles I'll remove the tape and replace it. It's not readily visible, and I doubt anyone would notice. But, you never know. So Mkraft - didn't know you could order one to replace the existing chrome. What did it cost to buy the replacement and have it installed? I'm also wondering if it makes sense to simply let the exhaust cover the chrome (not try to clean it). Maybe with enough coverage it will look black anyways!
Yes, it is just the tip and either comes in chrome or black. I think the part was $3500 and the installation was 4 hours ($1000). They have to remove the entire rear bumper as it is held in by clips from the inside.
This is after 900 miles and cleaning with gtechniq M1. Just ordered the black tip ($3700 installed). Image Unavailable, Please Login
Has any one seen the twin tip Novi option in person? Thoughts if any would be appreciated. Sent from my SM-S908U1 using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I have a GTS with a chrome tip which I hate. I'm having it replaced with the black tip which they quoted at about $2500 and that does not include installation. I believe that will add another $1000, They have to remove the rear bumper to install it. The mesh screen on the Novitech will require installation by someone and that will add to the cost, making that total over $3000 as well. I chose the black Ferrari tip because my dealer would not install the Novitech and also to keep the car exclusively Ferrari. I really like the look of the Novitech and would have done that even though I haven't seen it in person. Assuming you are good with non-Ferrari parts, I don't think you can go wrong with that look. .
Just to close the loop on this experiment, it doesn’t work. Too much heat. Polish it would appear is the only solution.
The best solution is to lose the chrome and buy the black - either Ferrari or Novitech. My dealer said they will never order or allow anyone to order the chrome one again.
