https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-ferrari-dino-246-gt-5/ Nitpicking, but there are a lot of issues with this car, albeit a very nice L. Regards, Alberto
Good day! Jon would do a complete restoration, as far as it was needed. Depends on the outlook, business or pleasure? This car is: A. A driver B. Full resto candidate. I would do the same, with the bonus that 'possibly' only an engine and transmission 'reseal' would do it. You have to make the chassis safe, brakes, fuel, electrics. We don't know if the chassis backbone is even still there??? How long are you willing to wait to have a fun, driveable car? All used Dino, are a can of worms, you never know what is under that paint More rust, or less? They ALL have rust from birth, with the exception of a precious few that were only under the sun during the build transition. Body made in May, then in for assembly. This car is more about fixing details, and make it right. I would do those, and drive it, after safety issues are addressed. Even leave the 'wrong' nose on. Regards, Alberto
Like most other vintage Ferrari, et. al. listings on BaT we've seen, the driving video for this one also featured someone's grandma at the wheel (seems quite anti-climatic from sales point of view). Didn't seem she got it much, if any, above 5K RPM. Do people actually drive these cars like that ? What's the "happy", i.e. optimum performance RPM range or redline for these engines ?
6,3 K is more than sufficient to my taste in a motor that will rev happily all day at 7K. A matter of personal choice, yet the 80% of sellers, never rev. If you don't show me the Dino, Daytona, Miura, Porsche, etc. doing redline in 1st and second, I will not believe leak downs. compressions, nada. If one day, I arrive personally, after showing the owner I am capable, I will never even think to buy unless I do the 7K thing. I don't get it... If it is a " Rambler, Pinto, Maverick, et al. I get it. That's OK, no RPM... You cannot run all day in ANY car at those rates, but to me it makes the sale. Not talking about this fantastic (recommended highly) video of the Targa Florio in an Alfa. But, I would not mind
Thanks, that's me behind the wheel. It's generally frowned upon to post driving videos of what goes on when the camera isn't rolling to BaT—at least that is, when the car is on public roads and should be abiding by local speed limits. Not to mention—it's not my car. It's owned by HK Motorcars, whom I am employed by. I'm lucky enough to have driven many a Dino at speeds and RPMs of all variety... but think of the driving video in these auctions as a spirited test drive in another person's car. Nothing disrespectful while also leaving something to be desired. Were it my own Dino L-series through backroads I know inside and out, and were the occasion for a recording more leisurely—rest assured it would be a different video entirely. You are welcome to come and test drive the car and get it up to 7k yourself. Rest assured, this car sings all the way. Salute
RJ, I have seen videos of cars that were driven as maniacs, totally nuts. Now that one is an over the top driving fashion, but at least 1st gear? I understand fully well what your message is about. Regards, Alberto
Opinions ? Here's mine: A car was offered through an auction and none of the interested parties (i.e. bidders/potential buyers) were willing to pay whatever the seller was expecting/hoping for.
...nor what the buyers thought it was worth... I mean, get rid of 25 errors + on the car, get the dreaded engine light (you will not). And it will be top notch L series. Then you do not sell it on BaT I mean, yes BaT for a McLaren or some sort of Bugatti, or a Pagani, track day Porker, neon signs, humidors, but not a 'primo' Dino.
