If I set off and accelerate steadily/not hard having just turned the engine on from stone cold my gear changes 1st to 2nd and often 2nd to 3rd can be very lumpy indeed. My dealer seems to think this is normal but it is a fair bit worse then I've experienced with previous cars, quite hard to keep the throttle steady which can make it all worse of course. Sometimes it can be smoother than other times. To be fair after half a mile or so it settles down but anyone else experience this?

I let my car always come up to operating temperature every time I start the car. I never drive off after just starting the car

Both my 296 and SF90 drive rough when the engines are cold. When they warm up, all is normal.

I let my car finish its cold start sequence before driving off - usually takes less than a minute. This smoothes things out a little. I wouldn't worry

Take it off Race mode and into Sport until you have had load on it for a few minutes and all white temps (not blue).

Always let it warm up for a.minute until the blue warm up icon is gone.

Thanks for your replies. I have had no yardstick to measure with, bought one of these without testing one at all. Amazing car but the cold running feel is on a par with my M6 from 18 years ago! To be fair it only takes half a mile or so to settle down but it was a bit disturbing. I guess the problem is setting off in hybrid mode although this is what it defaults to. I'll try switching to performance on start to let the engine warm itself first.

I’m confused. Are you turning the car on cold and immediately hammering it? Is this common practice? I would recommend you not do that.

Correct!! There is a blue engine icon that is in the middle that goes off once it’s warmed up enough to move.

Ironically, I had to run to the pharmacy yesterday and they closed at 5. It was 4:45 and figured I hadn’t taken the 296 out in a while so let me take that. Unplugged it, backed it out in EV mode and turned on the engine. I didn’t wait for the blue icon to go off and started to drive. It was jerky, wouldn’t let me change gears and it was clearly mad that I rushed it. :p Needless to say I won’t do that again.

How long does it usually take for the blue icon to clear? Are we talking 30s? minutes?

Ugh, so you have to start the car and sit there idling for minutes before you can drive off?

Ahhh ... okay, so it's fine to drive off once the start cycle completes, just don't hammer it until it warms up ... which is typically what I do with all my cars.

18 years ago, 18 months ago. Doesn’t matter. Internal combustion engines need time to properly warm up, primarily due to the catalytic converter and oil temps.

Also, the associated parts like transmission fluid, brake fluids and brakes themselves, etc. Even the loose nut behind the wheel can use a little bit of a warm up.
