I have a new to me 2006 430. I obtained it with the AC not working. Over the last weekend I replaced the dryer and did a vacuum test. Then I got the refrigerant back in the system. The compressor is running like normal. I got great cooling coming out of the vents at first while the car was sitting idling. Then it starts to get weird. Hot air starts to come out of the air vents. When I start to use the knobs to adjust the temperature, I noticed that if I rotate the knob to hot, it starts to blow cold and vice versa. So I took the car out for a drive and noticed that the little defroster vents above the air outlets by A pillars were hot while cooler was coming through the air vents. Also, while driving, the fan turned itself on and off randomly.
I found one other person on here that had a problem with an ECU. So I am starting to believe I might have an AC ECU problem. Does anybody happen to have a picture of where this is located? I’m thinking of swapping my AC ECU out of my 360 into the 430 for testing. Any advice would be great!
    thank you!

    John.

I've had weird instances like these as well. I fix it by pushing the recirculate button a few times and sometimes rotating the temp knob from full left to full right. Doesn't always work and I don't know exactly what's going on, but it seems to do the trick 99% of the time. I do notice that my blending/recirc doors tend to get sticky when moving. I think this is ultimately the cause of my issue. I'll press recirc or turn the temp, but notice a distinct slam open or closed if I crank the fan speed up full blast sometimes. I think something gumming up in the hinges is causing them to not move freely and get stuck in half positions, which would cause cold air in the defrost vents, but hot in the main vents.

I'm eventually taking the dash out to recover and will be taking apart the box during this time, but that won't be for a while.

Maybe with one of those snake cams? The box is buried in the dash. You might have a shot of seeing something if you were to take the glove box out and the glove box trim, but that's just a guess and there are levers to actuate the doors on both sides of it.

Here's what the box looks like: https://www.ebay.com/itm/383593395567

Was this with the fan setting in AUTO? I believe the fan will stop by design under certain conditions.

The system is also designed to allow outside air to enter the cabin periodically (to refresh the air in the cabin) even if the outside air is hot. This may or may not explain why you were getting some warm air (assuming the air outside was warm).

Unfortunately, neither the F430 Workshop Manual or the Owners Manual seem to give a proper description of HVAC operation. The F355 was a little better with its flow charts.

Fan was not in auto mode. That’s the strange part.

    Indeed.

It may be a good idea to take the car to someone who has a diagnositic tool which can interrogate the ECU to help with faultfinding. There are just too many things which can affect blower fan operation:

    Fan motor
    Fan speed controller ("hedgehog")
    ECU
    Control panel

With a recently purchased car, you don't always know if you're dealing with multiple failures or a single failure.

    UPDATE
So I was figuring that my problem was with the A/C ECU.
So I swapped the ECU from my 360 and put it in the 430 and presto the A/C worked! So now I am on the hunt for the ECU unit. Looks like superformance shows them on manufacturer back order. I will have to call the usual suspects on Monday. If any of you have a spare, that works….I am game!
