I got off work early and was able to make an appointment for the dyno at 3:30. Any suggestions? Will they know what gear the car needs to be in to measure power? Im hoping for 320rwhp. We'll see!

Ferrari says 355 has 375 HP at the flyhweel which means it should have a least 319 HP @ the Rear Wheel on Dyno Jet + 15% Power Loss for 6-Speed Manual Tranny (319 RWHP divided by 85% = 375HP)

Good luck! Also when you are at the Dyno place, can you please ask them if they have any Dyno for 360, I've heard the numbers are low for the 360.

    Thanks.

I doubt these guys have ever even seen a 360, let alone dynoed one.

From what ive heard, stock 355's make about 280-290 rwhp. This correlates with not only 360 power figures being off, but also 355.

Allan I have seen the same results with 96 to 98 355's. My old 1995 355 B with Tubi and no cats dynoed at 323 HP. In comparison, a stock 95 355 B with cats dynoed at 304 HP that same day. About a 20 HP gain which I thought was pretty good :)

    That's very good. 380 @ the crank if you have a 6-speed.

Jimmy, at the time I did not think anything of it because I felt that is what a 355 with 380 HP (flywheel) should, have with 15% loss through the drive-train, 320 HP with 230 lbs torque.

I am very surprised that the 360's are not producing more HP, they should be around 340 atw. :(

Redline, check out this site. It's the Tubi Japan site, so the characters are messed up, but rightclick/download the thumbnails. There's video of a F355 w/ tubi on a dyno.

No, the more the tires flex, no more energy they consume. You can see it in the tire temp, when they're soft they heat up (energy being stored), when they're cold they don't. The only exception is if they are slipping on the drum and you need the traction. Min pressure for max traction, at least at the drag strip. For a road course it's a little more complicated and ususally close to road pressure, may a little under. At an autocross the violent direction changes tend to roll the tires under and actually scub the side wall about an inch up (I've taken the lettering of the sides), so max pressure helps 42-45 psi is usually about right.

Well, i have bad news. The car put down 265rwhp. Just kidding. I went there, we strapped the car down. The guy would go in 1st, then shift 2nd, get into third, and get on it to redline. Everything looked good,(except the engine temp creeping up), but after several times, each time the dyno would say read error. So then they thought it was that the pick up wasnt working because of the coils, so we tried without it, and same deal. They said they will take the dyno appart and see what is going on. They had another car coming after mine, so they would figure it out quickly. They are going to call me and ill go do it again. I did get some pics and some video though. The dyno is a dynojet. Has anyone else experienced any problems with one of these?

Are you talking from experience or guessing? The whole point is that there's ALWAYS some slippage on the drum, isn't there? I remember a guy racing a porsche in a power/weight class went over limit with low pressure tyres and was fine with more pressure. They were slick, though.

I don't know the difference on different Dyno Jets, but I've been told it's always good to dyno at the gear which is closer to 1:1 ratio. I heard it's the 5th on Ferrari but I'm not sure.

    Take my BMW for example:

    TRANSMISSION................................ 5-speed automatic
    1ST GEAR RATIO/RPM/MPH.............. 3.57 / 6750 / 47mph
    2ND GEAR RATIO/RPM/MPH.............. 2.20 / 6750 / 70mph
    3RD GEAR RATIO/RPM/MPH.............. 1.51 / 6750 / 106mph
    4TH GEAR RATIO/RPM/MPH.............. 1.00 / 6750 / 157mph
    5TH GEAR RATIO/RPM/MPH.............. 0.80 / 6750 / 189mph
    REVERSE GEAR RATIO....................... 4.10
    FINAL DRIVE RATIO.......................... 3.15 limited-slip-differential
RPM @ 60MPH IN TOP GEAR............... 2050 rpm

So it would be 4th gear on my BMW. While watching the European Car Magazine people dynoing my car, I found they usually go easy with the 1st, 2nd & 3dr grear and then nail the 4th to the max RPM. You might want your shop to try this.

By the way, my BMW dynoed @ 377RWHP with 92 Oct Gas while the S/C running @ 8 PSI.

Experience, although most of my dyno time is with bikes. The 308 picked up a couple hp too, so it appears to be the same with cars. Was the porsche a high hp car? Just guessing, I would think right around 400-450 hp they would need to start dropping the tire pressure to keep it hooked. Going to a higher gear helps too, because it's actually torque at the wheels, not hp that makes them slip. I hear the "closest to 1:1" rule a lot, but I've never seen any data to support it, so simply up shifting would probably fix the slippage problem. If the input and output shafts in the trany are locked at 1:1, like Front engine US cars used to do that, I don't know if they still do, then you would want that gear, otherwise it doesn't really matter and hp will measure the same. Sometimes the dyno operator is worried about the tire speed (mph) because most street tires sold are not rated for high speed, but I'd expect that is not a concern with any tire you would have on a ferrari (unless you are really really cheap), they are normally all Z rated.
