I almost pulled the trigger on a 488 late in the spring, it was local, a good spec and everything checked out. I ultimately passed because I didn't want that turbo, figured to wait on a 458....not the point.

Fast forward to a few months later and I ran into the owner randomly driving it apparently it didn't sell or maybe he was the new owner I don't know. He wouldn't have known I had checked the car out as it was on consignment to a broker or dealer whatever h was. He buddied up to me because I also had a Ferrari and eventually told me all about how much he didn't care how much he drove it as he had the miles on it blocked with some device he got from Europe and he just takes it out any time he goes to the dealer, his Indy doesn't care. He encouraged me to do the same and said everyone he knows with an exotic does it.

I almost bought this car, came very close. I had half a mind to tell him his shrimpy little noodle armed old loser man ass off but I said **** it not worth my time.

How prevalent is this ****? Is this what I have to be worried about now when buying a Ferrari?

Never heard of it but so what? Since man invented the odometer others have been finding ways to manipulate them. How is this any different?
Anyone who believes an odometer at face value is a fool.
Read my lips Buy condition not mileage.

Do these also block the mileage in the transmission computer? I thought that was independent of the stored cluster mileage

Mileage is stored in more than one " location " on modern Ferrari.
Easy to detect and unless someone was simply not paying attention or not looking, it would be like waving a large red flag.
In order to over write odometer miles, there are multiple, very secure processes in place to prevent that from happening now.

Exactly, which is why you either need a PPI or at least have a clue and a scanner where you will easily catch the discrepancy. My guess is that when all the modern Ferrari's went to the dealer for their "brake reservoir" cap recall, Ferrari scanned and now knows which cars were clocked so they can avoid them in their pre-owned network.

When you say "Now", when would that have started approx? I ask because there have been various levels of data storage but in components frequently changed so the value was vary variable. It would help people to know a generation of car.

And to clarify, mileage readings are not worthless but need to be supported by more than just a claim its gospel truth.

I called 14 Ferrari service departments because I suspected a car I was interested in had at one time a mileage blocker. Every single one of them told me they couldn't detect it in the TCU or anywhere else.

Now, I don't know if this is true or not, but after 14 dealer calls, I gave up.

Starting with the 458 Series of Ferrari and newer

I'm curious, what specific Ferrari were you asking about at the time?

I had a Peugeot which ran the odometer backwards when in reverse. This was very useful on rally when distance travelled was used in the score, mistakes could be undone by driving backwards until the driving error was undone.

Signs of wear on the car, rotors, bolsters and engine bay components that looked older than the indicated mileage.

Bolster isn't the best indicator. They can be re-dyed, and more importantly if the driver wore jeans vs sweat vs golf pants you will have very different wear. also if they drag their butt across the bolster when they get in the car you can show wear in less than a few 1000 miles.

These things are extremely extremely common especially in Lamborghini McLaren and Bentley.

    Yes Ferrari too.

If younare buying a car in Florida you must have it checked. If you are taking a car from a lease also have it checked because that's how these ****ers beat the mileage restriction.

Perhaps incorrectly, but I've always been under the impression it is or has been illegal to "manipulate"(?) and/or report inaccurate odometer readings, at least in the US ?
But then again, there are countless other illegal things people do with or implement in their vehicles intended for use on public roads every day.

Correct it is a federal offense on anything 10 years and newer.

Other infrqxtions possible if it is older but still less.

Also if you do it and don't disclose it it is absolutely a form of unjust enrichment and you can get your pants sued off.

What really really sucks... Is when you are a dealer... You buy a car... One of the previous owners did this to the car and then you sell it... Everyone assumes you the dealer did it. Because no retail customer would ever think of doing it... Only a scumbag dealer.

Well it turns out there are scumbags in every profession and they drive cars too...

This stuff is really really really a mess
