Let's say you do your own service work or maybe have an independent shop perform your annual services each year. Do you then expect the Ferrari Dealership or other independent shop reset the service light for you free?

    Why or Why Not?

I would expect to pay maybe a 1/2 hour labor charge. Not really sure how much work is involved so that’s subject to change. The dealership is performing work so I expect to pay them.

Why should they? Part of the service you and I offer is a complete job including being equipped to reset the lights. That ability is costly and is figured into our service prices. It has to be paid for.

If it is otherwise a good client and you choose to help them out thats a different matter.

The equipment is expensive to purchase and maintain. Its cost of use far exceeds the labor time. I have a standard figure included in every estimate where one of the diagnostic computers is used.

Does the dealership say "Charity Ferrari" on the side of the building? Why on earth would anyone think they would do it for free?!

I would consider it in poor taste for a customer to ask for this for free.

I bought my car from Wife World Ferrari. They did the service and CPO etc but the green wrench for brake flush was not reset. They called Ft. Lauderdale Ferrari and worked it out with them and they reset it for free for ME.. maybe WW paid fort laud but I don’t know. In this type of case, I appreciate and agree for it to be free for me as a courtesy but in any other case, no it shouldn’t be free.. I don’t know if it was a favor they did cos they know each other etc or if WW just paid em for it but I was happy with that arrangement.

The good news is the wrench stops returning after seven years, unless you pay Ferrari to add more service spots. I think it costs $500 to get the annual green wrench.

Um, I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around… after 7 years, it STAYS on forever and you need to pay to turn it off

No but I expect and easy way for the owner to reset the light. Some cars like BMW's just drive me crazy. I can never figure out which direction to rub my belly and pat my head to get the light to turn off.

True, most, if not all, other cars can be reset ourselves. I know my AMG had a click, push, twist process that cleared the light after service. I did it once and MB told me how. I forget the process but it was reset-able through the buttons without needing a tool or machine to do it.

This exact question is part of how I draw the line on what cars to accept for service.
If I am invested in the correct equipment and have educated myself on the product I'll take it in and work on it. If not, no.
If your choice of service provider has not done the same you should reevaluate your choice.

Not a big fan of federal intrusion but there should be a master warning light reset. I know a guy who is fixing his own suspension problem and cannot turn out the light to confirm the fix. Thats not OK.

If any manufacturer does not provide an easy-to-access way for the owner to reset those lights, then it's on the dealer network to provide that service at low to no costs. If the dealers don't like that, they need to talk to the Factory.

That said, if you take it to an independent they need to be competent enough to complete the entire process, including the light.

No, you need to talk to the factory. The dealer is a business and has every right to charge a fair price to compensate for not only their time but also the capitol outlay for the very expensive equipment involved. They have no moral obligation to help you afford one of the more expensive cars on the road. Especially if you have chosen a service provider not properly equipped.
We had a saying in the dealer. I didn't buy it, I didn't build it but I can help you fix it.
    Maintain a little perspective.

Disconnecting the battery will do the same. What about all the other system warning lights with hard memory?

Yes I know, I have several OBD readers and computers. It was apparently a failed attempt at sarcastic post, as I would never expect a dealer to finish the job of an indy for free...or vice versa. If you want something for free, go to Autozone.

There are places that do that, but especially, there are places that will take your
seafood/fishing catch and prepare and cook it for you.

PS - we had two places here that I know of that would cook your steak for you, but
it wasn't exactly cheap, and I think Covid killed off both of them.
