355 Colour Change?

And that happens even in official Ferrari shops. I had put new under tray bolts and washers to my 360 just before major service and when car came back some were missing and some were old, rusty hardware. And in Northern Europe Ferrari shop dudes are invoiced closer 200€/h from customer...

 

Unreal, worst still if you order hardware from Ferrari it's not the same as our cars came with. Especially the rubber tipped nuts on the under tray. But they sure like to add the Ferrari tax to basic ***** hardware.

 

I can tell you that Blue Le Mans is an amazing color. It really is beautiful in the sun. It's both dark and light blue. I'd look for one of those instead of repainting one. It's stunning and possibly my favorite color on the F355. My friend has one in Japan with dark blue leather and blue carpet and it is incredible!

Have you tried looking at the colors which were available back for the '95 model year?

My advice is to keep looking. The right one will come along that just speaks to you. You'll know it is the one.

Even if one turns up it’s mega $$$ to buy. I frankly doubt a color change to blue if done correctly will impact value much if at all. There just aren’t many to choose from.

 

Mannnn, don't do TdF. So many better blues to choose from. Blu swaters, blu chiaro, blu sera. Blu le mans.

 

A proper color change is $20k plus. You doing disassembly will help, but moving car and post painted parts is not easy. Braden is probably $30k doing all of it, maybe more. Come to think of it, a true color change requires serious R/I… I could be low on price. At my shop, definitely $25-30 if I take it apart. There is a lot to do, to do it correctly.

I am sorry, but don’t know what you have for a car now? Most Gated cars are $200k plus today. Let’s use that. You spend $25k and lose 10% in value, maybe a bit more. I think you can sell your car and find a blue and spend $45-60k

You get a cheap paint job or questionable quality and it may be even worse. Why do that to an original car? You can find a blue 2.7 car. I am sure you can…. Maybe not and if spending money is of no consequence and really moot for you, then by all means feed the small business economy. I am all for that!

I agree with your assumptions on the cost of the labor and paint. Figure a little north of $20K in my case. I've seen a lot of the painter's work and to my eyes it's excellent. That said, my car is probably worth closer to $145K. It's not a low mileage show car in a rare color. I like to drive and enjoy my cars.

The way I look at it is a nice blue 2.7 Berlinetta is extremely rare and will likely cost $200K plus to buy. Add to that the inevitable sorting it will need, plus registration and CA tax at around 10%. My car is already sorted and I might not even be able to find the car I'd want for several years. And if do sell it someday which is unlikely, I'd bet there are quite a few folks who would find a blue 2.7 berlinetta desirable notwithstanding the color change. And if I'm wrong, oh well. I've got the car I want right now. Life is short.

$200k will get you the Chiaro 355 from Europe. It’s already sorted. You’ll need Montana plates for it in CA though, but no 10% sales tax.

 

Oh yea Ken. You're totally enabling me. Blue LM is great, but TDF is even better.

 

I’ve seen the colors in person, but can’t say I have intimidate knowledge of them as they change colors drastically in various conditions. However, I’ve been told TDF is a truer blue, while other 355 blues such as Swaters and BLM have grayish or purple-ish undertones.

 

That's my impression as well.

For those with experience, I would like your opinion on rear glass removal. I've seen a number of shops have good results with masking the seal (which doesn't overlap the paint unlike the windshield seal) instead of removal. I'm leaning this way as the thought of the glass guy breaking the rear glass is not something I want to deal with. Not by a mile.

 

Based on that description and assumptions, if you value your car at $145 and feel $20k is doable, your car is sorted and dialed in, then change the color. You will probably break even or lose $20-30k short term or you get $165 if market moves farther north and someone wants you car. Especially if well documented, rare spec and colors get to $300k as they already are moving that way.
