    Isn’t the engine supposed to turn off when you stop at a red light or stop sign unless you turn off the HELE function? Because the engine never shuts down when stopped. When you press the HELE button it shows in the dash whether the system is on or off, but nothing changes in terms of the engine shutdown. Not complaining just want to know if the system is malfunctioning. 2019 Portofino.

    When the HELE system is on it may decide to turn off the engine after the car is stopped - but there are some conditions like for any stop-start system (depends on temperature and other factors). It should happen sometimes though, if the engine never stops while HELE is on it's suspicious.

    Has this issue been resolved as my car is doing same - 488 GTB - can switch it on and says on and light is on but no Stop Start

    On modern Alfa Romeos when the Stop-Start system isn't working it usually a dead giveaway that the battery is starting to go bad.

    System voltage is one of the parameters the ECU checks before enabling Stop-Start.

    Just fitted a new battery today and no change.

    Apparently the battery electronic thing on top needs 59 miles or so to recalibrate. Should work then.
