The software update to remove the pops was due to premature exhaust valve wear from the fuel dumps combusting in the exhaust. If you can find a 458 with the pops still there, your valves likely need replacing.

Maybe no documentation available, but make sense. Pops and crackles are gas injected in the chamber without spark that explodes in the exhaust due to high temp, reason why valves may suffer.

 

Nice piece of info, always heard about the updates and its effect on the sound, but never read about the reason. Makes sense.
