Unsure whether I have an issue or not, but my car and garage smells like gasoline (very strong) after I take the car out. Per previous owner, driver side pump has had epoxy on the cap to fix leak. So perhaps other side is leaking. I've heard that some say replace the whole pump and others say the epoxy on the cap is OK. Can yall share your opinion on it, so I can fix appropriately?
Please help. Need some support. Cmon, anyone out there! [email protected]. Just post Ferrari in subject. Thank you
If you want to risk the epoxy cracking and fuel pumping onto the hot headers, and the chance to burn your car to the ground, your choice, but for a few hundred dollars to replace the broken pump hanger and be worry free, that would be my choice, but decision is yours, sounds like you have already decided to epoxy it, if you don't like the answer, don't ask the question
If u are going to trouble of epoxy the cover panels are already off just change pumps. U can get the bosh pumps cheap, covers gaskets etc. both sides for less than $500. If one part of plastic is cracked other parts already stressed. Not worth duct taping it. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I am all for "if it's stupid, but it works, it's not stupid.", but not in this case. Failure means fire and catastrophic destruction of the car, possibly your home, and/or death. Pay the money to have them replaced, this is one of those things you shouldn't mess around with.
A strong smell of fuel is not good-- at all. In my situation I only got a hint of fuel smell and found only a small, very small leak at the top of my left side sender/pump unit. So as result I just faced the same situation with my 360. After thinking about it, I had to believe that the plastic has been heated and cooled too many times to trust that it wouldn't fail at the fuel line nipple where the fuel would be exiting under pressure and literally spraying all over the engine compartment. It was a true PIA to do the replacement but IMO it's the only option. Plus for the 360 it appears that there has been an upgrade to the "plastic" that is used-- just replace it, have peace of mind, and you most likely won't have to deal with it for many years to come. Plus, I would replace the one that has been repaired with epoxy too.
@iheartf430s : REPLACE before you burn your car. I had the same smell and once I realized what the problem was, thanks to folks on this site, I had it towed in and had the fuel pumps replaced. There is a design flaw in the original fuel pumps and it will start leaking a the top. My mechanic showed me how the fuel would run down the side and then drip on the cats.
Here is a photo of the fuel pumps. The smaller one in the back is from a 360: Image Unavailable, Please Login
I noticed chipping on the passenger side fuel pump when I bought my car four years ago. An epoxy "fix" failed and it leaked anyways years later. Both now replaced.
Going to do this preemptively as well. I don't smell anything but the spider top makes them easy to get to. Plus, it's really time age-wise. Looking at eurospares, the part diagram says "complete fuel pump." Does anybody know if this includes new ring nuts/upper gaskets as they're listed separately.
Maybe the F430 ones are cheaper? Even found one on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/BOSCH-Module-FERRARI-Spider-0580314081/dp/B00BHGQIWA/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=3Cwxr&content-id=amzn1.sym.2ada0ca8-c08f-4dd3-bf6e-06e1e651bb29%3Aamzn1.symc.ebdd2303-2907-45b9-b343-3896226c508a&pf_rd_p=2ada0ca8-c08f-4dd3-bf6e-06e1e651bb29&pf_rd_r=CS56R9PPF996C7456FYQ&pd_rd_wg=RK8Cp&pd_rd_r=8b43eb25-6ee2-485c-bd9a-ce65980d8436&ref_=pd_hp_d_atf_ci_mcx_mr_ca_hp_atf_d
Good call! They are easy on the spider, although try to do it with as empty a tank of gas as you can. I ordered these: 2 x 181682 (ring) 1 x 239811 (RH Pump) 1 x 239812 (LH Pump)
They have two listed on eurospares site. One that's over $400 and one that's $250 or so. The cheaper one says it's a "eurospares approved part." Guessing that' the Bosch branded one, not in a Ferrari box? Anybody know if they're selling another brand?
Thanks yall. Sounds like the wise thing to do is replace pump and spend a bit more. I got it to the shop today since it's getting the F1 accumulator looked at, and they're going to look fuel pump too. The mechanic also advised against epoxy.
To add... it would probably nearly impossible to get the plastic around the crack completely clean of fuel and residue in order to gain the necessary adhesion of the epoxy.
Makes me wonder if it would be a good move to epoxy the new ones before install as a safeguard. Or did they change the plastic in this area?
Definitely replace if you're there already. Whether you feel mechanically inclined enough to do so or you're paying someone it's easier to do the job right once than have to start over again. On that same note while you're there the rollover valves are notorious for cracking and causing a fuel smell as well. Problem is all of these things are plastic and will crack and break as time goes on anyway and the roll over valves if you have a full tank and the gas is sloshing around during cornering it can spill into them and also leak out onto your exhaust igniting the fuel. I had a Lamborghini Gallardo that the fuel pump leaked and caught fire on the freeway and the thing burned to the ground. I can tell you from experience it's not worth it and is a terrifying experience although in my case only the car was hurt so overall lucky and happy with the turnout. If anyone wants to see the video (there are several) here is one link: I am the dude in the orange and white stripes. You can also just google Utah Lamborghini catches fire and find it easily too. Bottom line, replace don't epoxy.
Just for clarification ....the part numbers above are for the spider not coupe. The couple number are: gasket = #181681 LH pump = #239821 RH pump = #239820
I had a left pump leak but replace both the pumps. I did "fix" the left pump where the crack was (bottom of one of the pie section) by filling it with clear enamel epoxy. Take a look.... I ran it and it didn't leak.....honestly, I think it would hold but you really should replace it. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
