    1980 Fiat X1/9 - odo says 63,000 miles

Me having multiple X1/9s, I'm going to sell my good one to fund the rebuild of the bad one. haha. Car in Redmond, WA.

I bought it a few years ago from an owner who bought it at Carter VW when he was 18 in 1985. He had it 35 years until I got it.

This is a 1980 FI car that has spent all its life in Washington State in the US. Originally rosso metallizzato it was repainted many years ago with a slightly darker, less pink metallic red. Cosmetically very original, but has quite a few good modifications. Dash is darn near perfect, door cards too. Seats are very good.

    Engine specs:
1500 FI block bored to 87mm. Block decked .010
Crank ground .010" under, new bearings
    9.2:1 pistons and rods balanced.
Lightened factory flywheel (done by PBS!)
1500 FI Head with .030" shave
Mild porting plus matching of head and intake runners
    FAZA 35/75 Cam
    Piper adjustable cam pulley.
Megasquirt II - v3.57SMD assembled board
Ford EDIS ignition with tooth wheel attached to modified crank pulley
Factory FI plenum, runners, fuel rail
Injectors cleaned and flow tested at build
large cone air filter and fabricated intake piping
    VW Idle air control valve
Vick Auto header - ceramic coated
Custom dual-tip muffler professionally welded. No catalyst.
Rebuilt transmission using 3.59:1 Strada diff (stock is 4.08)

    Also:
    Wilwood Whoa! brakes up front
    IAP springs with KYB struts
    Aluminum radiator

A couple issues: Could use some additional tuning on the MegaSquirt. Gets into a weird mode sometimes, a quick restart fixes it. Original carpet has a bare spot under the driver's foot, but is under the plush floormats so not all that noticable.
Some paint blemishes--clear coat kind of going on the trunk lid, a stain of some kind on the frunk, and little dings and chips on the doors. I think the clearcoat and stain could be improved greatly, I'll give that a go when I have a chance.

If ever there was a car that needed 200 HP--the FIAT X1/9 is it.

I have had a fantasy for decades about putting a 1L motorcycle engine with 200 HP in an X1/9
would save 200 pounds, knock off the front/read bumpers for another 100± pounds and we have a 1500 pound car with 200 HP.

Gear it for 150 MPH and enjoy...

Speaking of which, is it a noticeable performance increase with the engine work?

Back in the 1980s (early) I put a 35/75 cam, 10.5:1 pistons, 2 DCNF 36 Carbs and a 4-1 exhaust in my 1300 X1/9 got the weight down to 1850....
    It would run with a 240 Z.

Yes it is noticeable. It's not a K-swap or anything, but it's strong.

Xweb folks seem to be mostly interested in money and time sucking projects. The cheaper, the better.

There is certainly some truth to that! :D

They have however been invaluable to me as I work through my cheap build and are generous in terms of both information and material, a local xweb guy gave me a replacement fuel tank as it was one of the few unsalvageable parts on my car. I suspect many like me who are looking for the right car are keeping an eye on there – and for many this certainly would be the right car!

Lovely car. Would you do me a favour please? Share a photo of the headlamp lift motors. I suspect they are the same as those found on Ferraris with popup headlights. It would be good to find another, potentially cheaper, source of them!

Midwest Bayless here in Ohio is your best USA bet for Fiat parts.

Their website shows individual pictures of the X1/9 headlight motors.
